Charles Dawson Riley

Charles "Chuck" Dawson Riley, a loving father, grandfather, veteran, and cherished member of the Zionsville, Indiana community, passed away on May 4, 2025.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Charles lived a life marked by ambition, perseverance, and steadfast love. As a young man, he proudly served his country as a Navy diver during the Korean War-a role that reflected his courage and devotion, qualities he carried throughout his life.
Charles was passionate about business and eager to share the entrepreneurial lessons he learned along the way. Over the years, he owned and operated many businesses, including the Arena Inn, Chariot House, and the Warren Hotel, later known as the Canterbury Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.
He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Riley, his partner in life and love. Together, they raised four children: Victoria, Cheryl, Shauna, and Rocky. His greatest pride came from his family-especially his eleven grandchildren: Steve, Chuck, Rachel, Charlize, Collin, Trinity, Connor, Kelsey, Olivia, Jordan, and Kai-and his great-grandchildren: Johnathan, Alexis, Charlie, Curtis, Tyler, and Samantha. He adored and inspired each of them.
A familiar face in Zionsville, Charles, aka Dawson, was known for his generosity, humor, and the wisdom gained from a life well-lived. Whether offering thoughtful advice, sharing stories from his many adventures, or simply offering a warm greeting to others at his favorite spots around town, his presence touched everyone he met.
He will be remembered not only for his authenticity, but also for his charisma, enduring spirit, and the boundless love he gave to those around him.
A visitation will be held at Simplicity Funeral Home, 125 West Sycamore St., Zionsville, IN, on May 12 from 1-3 p.m. The family will host a Celebration of Life at Zionsville CoHatch, 75 N. Main St., Zionsville, IN, at 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend and share their favorite Dawson stories.
