Charles (Mark) Walker passed away at his home on August 10, 2024, following a season of declining health.
Mark Walker was born to Rev. Charles O. & Betty Anne Hulsey Walker in Macon, Georgia on March 23, 1959. By all accounts, Mark was a Momma's boy. His love for his Momma was evident throughout all of his life. He would have moved heaven & earth to have given her a longer life. While Mark & his Daddy had different interests, they shared many similar qualities. Both enjoyed long car rides, often with no destination in mind, talking with loved ones, and sharing a good meal. Mark was a devoted son to both his parents throughout their earthly lives. Mark was their only child until the birth of his younger brother & best friend, Paul Dorsey Walker. Though a couple years apart, they were always each other's person. Together, Mark & Paul traveled the east coast attending baptist conventions, spent time exploring Europe & the Holy Land, and most importantly spent time with their beloved Mawmaw & Pawpaw.
Growing up, Mark was an extroverted talker, an artist, and an explorer. He always enjoyed a day of playing football or fishing for hours. Mark attended the very first Kindergarten class at the First Baptist Church of Jasper that was started by his beloved Momma. From there, Mark continued school in Pickens County. While attending Pickens High School, Mark played football & was named Mr. PHS his senior year.
Throughout Mark's life, he carried the ability to create beauty out of the ordinary. Whether it be a blank canvas or a rock, Mark would paint a picture that would capture the eyes and heart of all those who saw it. If handed a guitar, Mark could play a large array of songs by memory.
Too soon in his life, a large part of Mark's heart was broken with the tragic loss of his baby brother Paul. While time can bring healing and partial restoration, it can never heal a wound that deep. Mark is proceeded in death by his brother Paul, and both of his parents.
Though not a Sunday morning kind of guy, Mark's faith has always been a part of his life. From attending mission trips, working summers at Camp Glenn, or just talking to God over a beer, Mark has been spiritual all of his life. Mark believed without a doubt that his family was waiting for him in heaven. They've prepared a place for him at the table. A table filled with food that is homemade by his Momma, blessed by his Daddy, and shared with his best friend & baby brother, Paul. After a long life of waiting for his heart to be healed, Mark is now reunited with his beloved family.
Mark is survived by his wife, Mary Burnett Walker of Ellijay, Georgia, and his children; Mary Clinton and husband, Jeff Clinton. Elizabeth Haemmerle and husband, Chad Haemmerle. Laura Boothe, John Walker and fiance, Linda Zhao, and Rev. Anna Walker; several grandchildren and lifelong best friend, Avery Padgett.
Per Mark's request, there will be no service. If you wish to celebrate his life & honor his memory, take time to fish, share a good meal with your loved ones, or drink a beer with old buddies.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the National HeadStart Association as they continue the commitment to a window of opportunity for the most vulnerable children, families, and communities.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
