Cheryl grew up in Macon, was a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen at Lanier High School, and was a 1965 graduate of A.L. Miller High School. She went on to further her education at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, where she was a founding sister in the Phi Mu Sorority and a little sister, "Rose," for the fraternity that later became Kappa Alpha. Always fashionable and lovely, she was selected as "The Prettiest Girl on Campus" by the school's yearbook, The Reflector. It was at Georgia Southern that she met and married the love of her life, Vic Correll, Jr., and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design. A devoted wife, she traveled and moved with Vic as he played professional baseball for various organizations. After Vic's baseball career ended, the couple returned to Statesboro, and she worked at Design Concepts and with Waters Furniture Company, all the while earning a Master's Degree in Education. The family moved to Nashville, Georgia, where Cheryl taught 8th Grade English at Nashville Middle School. Six years later, they moved one last time and settled in
Perry, Georgia, to be near their college friends. Cheryl soon accepted a position as 8th Grade Language Arts teacher at Perry Middle School. Some years later, Mrs. Correll was named Teacher of the Year at Perry Middle School, an honor she was proud to share with many other distinguished teachers in Houston County. After teaching all day and raising a family, she earned a Specialist's Degree in Education. She later became the Reading Specialist at PMS. To help put her children through college, she taught night classes in the Education Department at Mercer University in Macon.
After thirty years in Education, Cheryl retired and was able to focus on being "Honey" to her grandchildren. Becoming "Honey" inspired her to create a magical space for them by painting the entire upstairs of her home with an outdoor story book theme. Rain or shine, the grandchildren always had a place to have fun. She was diligent in reading to them and with them, sharing her infectious laugh with them, and playing with them every chance se got. Her creativity shines through in each of her grandchildren. She was so proud of each and every one of them. Cheryl enjoyed sewing and always made the window treatments in her home, as well as many precious outfits for her grandchildren when they were babies. She spent many hours gardening, which was evident by the beautiful blooms and gorgeous landscape around her home. Cheryl had an intense love of music and dancing. She was funny, and her sense of humor and the sound of her laughter will never be forgotten.
Cheryl was predeceased by her parents, Leon and Doris Culpepper; her life-long best friend and sister, Cathy Miller; and many beloved dachshunds.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Cheryl are her loving husband of fifty-seven years, Vic Correll, Jr. of Perry; her children, Vic Correll, III (Colleen) of Valdosta, Amy Correll McDonnell (Tim) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Maggie Correll Bennett (Kevin) of Perry; twelve grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brothers, David Culpepper and Stephen Culpepper; and several nieces and nephews.
Three years ago, after sustaining an injury, an angel came into Cheryl's life. Glyneece "Neece" Williams began as a caregiver and quickly became Cheryl's best good friend, companion, and soulmate. Neece's love for Cheryl and Vic is rare, and she will forever be a part of the Correll family.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
