Obituary of Chester Steven Gronkowski
Chester S. Gronkowski, a life-long resident of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. He was 91 years old.
Chester was born on July 20, 1931, in Poughkeepsie to Anna and Karol Gronkowski. He attended and graduated from St. Joseph's Parochial Schools in 1946 and from Poughkeepsie High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 until his Honorable Discharge in 1955.
He was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Poughkeepsie. He worked for many years at Western Printing and then at the Poughkeepsie Journal.
He was an avid fan of football, basketball, and baseball and followed many of the NY teams, including the Yankees and the NY Giants. Additionally, he often followed local sports events and enjoyed attending many of his nephews' games over the years. He also enjoyed playing pinochle and an occasional bus trip to a casino or racetrack.
Chester was a kindhearted man who always had nice things to say and always took any situation in stride. Chester was part of a large family that loved him dearly. At family gatherings he would tell stories and enjoyed querying the youngsters. He also spent time with his brothers, sisters, and other family members working on countless numbers of 1,000-piece puzzles to which he may have found just two or three pieces but to Chester, it was all about enjoying the company of his family.
Chester was predeceased by his parents and eight of his siblings (Vincent, Walter, Frank, Jan and Joseph Hochlowski, H. Jean Johnson, John Gronkowski and Victoria Zamudio).
He is survived by his brother, Henry Hochlowski of Wappingers Falls, NY and many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
The family would like to thank Chester's neighbors on Marian Ave. in Poughkeepsie for their many years of friendship and assistance. The family would also like to thank his many recent caregivers who helped to make his final years and months more enjoyable.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am Tuesday August 23, 2022 at St Joseph's Church 9 Lafayette Place Poughkeepsie, New York 12601. Burial will follow with Miliary Honors at Calvary Cemetery Poughkeepsie, New York.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, New York.
