Brooksville-(Lois) Colleen Dummitt, (née McClanahan), 82 years old, of 2307 Glen Drive in Maysville, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at the Meadowview Regional Medical Center, after suffering a heart attack.
Colleen was born on August 2, 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from Bracken County High School in 1961 and graduated from Morehead State University with a BA in 1965 and a MA degree in 1966.
Colleen met the love of her life, Dale Dummitt, at Morehead and they were married on June 1, 1963. They were happily married and spent sixty wonderful years together until Dale's passing in 2023.
Colleen and Dale relocated to Horseheads, NY in 1969 when Dale was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to pursue a Master's Degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Colleen taught all levels of high school English at Elmira Free Academy in Elmira, NY, from 1969-1998.
Colleen and Dale retired in 1998 and later returned to Kentucky and resided in Maysville. They enjoyed golf with friends in Horseheads and later with friends at Laurel Oak Golf Club where they were members for several years. They both had a passion for gardening and enjoyed sharing produce with many of their Washington Glen neighbors. Colleen was known in her neighborhood for her beautiful flowers.
Colleen was a dedicated fan of UK basketball and loved watching the games with her husband. She loved to travel and had been to Europe several times and went on many adventures with her sisters.
She is survived by her daughter Cindy (John) Scott and granddaughter Sasi Scott of Middletown, Ohio, and her son Sean (Anna Laura Bennett) and granddaughters Claudia June Bennett-Dummitt and Lucy Ann Bennett-Dummitt of Odenton, Maryland. She is also survived by her sisters, Sharon Teegarden of Brooksville, Kentucky, and Kim McClanahan of Waynesboro, Virginia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Erma Hamilton, of Greensburg, Indiana and many nieces and nephews of the Dummitt family as well as nieces and nephews from the McClanahan family, and a former brother-in-law, Jay White, of Sandpoint, Idaho. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Michele McClanahan White, of Augusta, Kentucky and brothers-in law, Richard Teegarden of Brooksville, Kentucky, and Lou Kalin of Waynesboro, Virginia.
She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Horseheads, New York, a proud member of NYSUT (New York State Teachers Union) She was also a baptized member of the former Wellsburg Christian Church, which her husband helped to build in the early 1960's along with her father, Adrian McClanahan, and her brother-in-law, Richard Teegarden. More recently she was a member of New Hope Christian Church in Maysville. Yesterday

I was so sorry to hear of Colleen's passing. She and I both taught English in the Elmira, NY school district, she at Elmira Free Academy and I at Elmira Southside High School. During that time I had the pleasure of working on several committees with her. We had a close bond since my mother had grown up in Germantown, Kentucky (Virginia Kalb) so I knew many of the places that were dear to Colleen's heart. She was loved and admired by many of the teachers and students whose lives she touched with a keen sense of humor and an incredible amount of knowledge about the literature she shared. It was an honor for me to serve with her on committees that developed curriculum and also methods to assist students who experienced difficulty with the New York state tests. After she retired and returned home to Kentucky, we kept in touch to share what was happening with our gardens and, of course, Kentucky basketball! My deepest sympathies go to her family whom she loved very much. There are many people here in Elmira whose lives she touched and who will cherish her memory.
