Craig LaBay Obituary

LABAY, Craig W.

Craig W. LaBay, 78, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025. Born on May 6, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, Craig was the son of the late James LaBay and Elizabeth (Fial) LaBay. He was predeceased by his brother, William. Craig graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1969. He was a member of the school golf team — a passion he carried throughout his life. After a brief period as a teacher, he embarked on a long and successful career in the insurance industry, retiring from Ohio National Financial Services. He lived in several cities before settling in Atlanta, where he built a wide circle of friends and became a devoted member of the Ansley Golf Club. Among his many cherished golf memories was the day he scored a hole-in-one at the club's Settindown Creek course — a personal highlight. In retirement, Craig embraced the opportunity to travel more and spend even more time on the golf course. He will be remembered as a kind and caring friend who truly valued the company of others. Whether sharing a meal at his home, in a restaurant, or playing a round of golf, Craig made those around him feel welcome and appreciated. He was an avid reader, enjoyed listening to NPR, and a thoughtful conversationalist, always eager to engage on a wide range of topics. His beloved black Lab, Pete, was a constant companion and brought him great joy. Craig is survived by his brother, Michael J. (Dorothy) LaBay of Clarkston, Michigan, and their children. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 1:00 PM at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Atlanta, GA. Interment of his ashes will immediately follow in St. Anne's memorial garden.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Craig's memory may be made to the Atlanta Humane Society or National Public Radio (NPR).
