GREENFIELD – Delma R. "Dale" Nasby, age 85, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, November 17, 2023. Born on October 10, 1938, in Glasgow, Kentucky, he was the son of Sigurd Knutson Nasby and Velma Lee (Taylor) Nasby. He attended Columbus High School in Columbus, Indiana. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers #103. He worked as a heavy machine operator and helped build I465 and I70. After being gone for two solid weeks plowing snow in the Blizzard of 1978, he plowed his neighboring road and all the neighbor's driveways before going to bed. He also did side jobs for years before going out on his own where he owned and operated Nasby Excavating for over 30 years.
Horses were a big part of Dale's life. He started breaking and training horses as a kid. He began training racehorses both Quarter Horses (in the 1970s) and thoroughbreds (in the 1980s). He won awards for his training ability and was well respected by many in the horse industry. Dale had a heart for horses and a heart for kids. He helped many people get their first horse, and he enjoyed teaching anyone who wanted to learn how to ride and how to better handle their horse. He taught his children and grandchildren and most won top achievements in 4-H. He continued to contest with both his children and grandchildren into his late 70s. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI), Indiana Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective (HPBA) Association, Indiana Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association and was an avid supporter of the Hancock County 4-H Horse and Pony Club. Dale was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors and friends. He was a hard worker who took pride in the work he did and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Dale is survived by his sons, Rick Nasby (Inge Imel) of Columbus and Bruce Nasby (Phyllis) of Greenfield; daughters, Becky Corwin (Marty) of Springville and Diane Petry (Scott) of Greenfield; grandchildren, Shane Nasby (Angela), Ryan Nasby (Hannah), Emily Remsburg (Nick), Myles Nasby (Ashley), Jessica Harvey, Jason Carr, Brandon Carr (Samantha), Amanda Corwin, Alisha Powell (Jaron), Aaron Corwin (Ari), Kyle Petry (Lauren), Keenan Petry, Kirby Petry, Karter Petry (Lacey), Bryce Vinard, Cayleb Vinard, and Andrew Vinard, and 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Severt Nasby (Carol) of Whiteland; and sisters, Nora May Dailey of Columbus and Donna Marie Knowles (Jim) of Manchester, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sigurd and Velma; wife, Jawanda "Jo" Nasby; infant son, Steven K. Nasby; infant daughter, Sherri K. Nasby; brothers, Clifford, James, Maxwell and Virgil Nasby; and sisters, Gana Worgum and Erma Franklin.
