I am so sorry to hear of Dana´s passing. I played for him from 1978 to `80 when he was coaching the defensive line at Bates. He challenged us to be better every day. He cared about us and always treated us with respect. I have thought about him often over the years. He made a difference in my life.

I know I'm not alone in saying that I feel very fortunate to have swam for Coach Mul at Bates. Our hearts go out to his wife, Jane, and his three children, Amy, Kate, and Rob.
Coach Mul was a caring man that wanted the best for all of his swimmers. He taught us about life-long friendships and the value of working together on a team. He weaved his lessons at daily practices, on the team bus, during training trips, and at swim meets. He built a strong swimming and diving program along with a successful athletic department.
On a personal note, he taught me that peanut M&Ms taste best when eaten immediately after a workout, a lesson I've carried through to today.
Coach Mul will be missed by many--a testament to his life work.
Jane, thank you for sharing him with us. He meant a lot to all those he touched, and we are grateful that you gave up many nights and weekends so that he could work with the team. Thank you for opening your home to us for team barbecues and events, they really helped to make us all feel like we were part of a Bobcat family.
We'll miss you, Coach. Thank you for being there for all of us.

Dana Mulholland was our 'Coach of Coaches'...a true friend, mentor to all, and dedicated leader of his football and swimming teams at Bates College. I will always remember the dual meet our Tufts swimming team had in the Bates pool many years ago. The Jumbo swimmers and divers entered the competition as the favorites to beat the Bobcats. The Tufts team was not prepared for the battle that ensued that day. Dana had his team focused on victory from the start of the first event. There was nothing I could do to rally the Tufts men that day. When the victory was determined before the last relay...I remember greeting Dana on the side of the pool... we were both emotional for a moment...I was so happy to see Dana celebrating with his team ... and my sincerity far outweighed the disappointment I had for the Tufts men on that fateful day! I will miss the many New England swimming championships where we shared the pool deck together cheering on our teams, and laughing with all our coaching pals afterwards as we hoisted a few 'Miller Lites on Ice' to each other. Rest in Peace dear friend. With loving Jumbo Hugs......Donald R. Megerle, Tufts University

I remain deeply shocked by this devastating news. Coach Mul left an indelible mark on my life, transcending the confines of my brief and, in my eyes, inconsequential swimming career. He stood as a remarkable role model, both as an exceptional coach and a truly exemplary family man. I have many wonderful memories of him, and I am acutely aware of his enduring influence on the Bates swimming program. To Jane, Rob, Amy, and Kate, please accept my heartfelt love and an abundance of warm hugs.

Coach Mul was the very best. A gentle and kind soul. I loved swimming for him at Bates, and if it weren't for him, I probably would not have been a collegiate swimmer. What a wonderful coach, and what a difference he made in so many peoples' lives, especially mine.

I only had Coach Mul for a year, but he was the best coach I had in my entire career. He also had a great and very dry sense of humor. I will miss him.

Coach Mul was really the most formative person for my college life. I saw him everyday and weekends for swimming over the course of four years. But he meant so much more to me than can be limited to swimming alone. He loved coaching, he was so much more than a coach, he loved his family who he talked about all the time and we met a few dinners a season when he hosted the team at his home. I miss you so much, Coach Mul. Your endless enthusiasm and boundless kindness are qualities I think about everyday.

An amazing coach and a true friend. So very blessed to swim my senior year for Coach Mul in his first year leading Bates swimming, and also to join him, a few years later, on the pool deck. When we moved back to L/A, our son was an infant and I called asking if he knew any swimmers who might babysit. Mul's reply? How about you come help coach and ask them yourself!! Best boss ever! Sending our deepest condolences and much love to Jane and the rest of the family.

Coach Mul is a big part of the reason why I came to Bates in 2004. I still have a handwritten recruitment letter from him framed in my childhood bedroom. It was a big move to Lewiston from Salt Lake City, and he always offered to host me with his family over the holidays if I couldn´t make it home. He was so kind and caring, especially when the race didn´t go as planned. We were lucky to swim for him.

I swam for Bates from 1988-1992. Coach Mul´s sense of humor and kind spirit were boundless. My favorite swimming memories are goofing off outside his office with Mary, Dede and Martha. The van ride to New Englands. Oh, the patience he had with us crazy kids! His deliberate and firm approach in the pool and somewhat bemused approach to our antics outside the pool informed my own Coaching style and has been passed to my swimmers. Sending lots of love to the family and friends.

I´m so sorry to hear of Coach Mul´s passing. I swam on his team at Bates from 1999 to 2003. I remember a calm, steady yet motivational influence. The swim team was such an important part of my Bates experience and I´m so grateful coach gave me the chance to be a member of the team. With my love, thoughts, and prayers,

I am so saddened by this news. I only swam for Coach Mul for a year-my freshman year at Bates, but his smile and enthusiasm for both swimming and coaching young athletes was the reason I chose to attend Bates in the first place. Mul was the first swim coach to see me and appreciate me as an athlete. He made swimming fun. He made it a team sport. I will never forget getting out of the water at NESCACs after dropping 30 seconds off my best time in the 1000 and basically just collapsing into a Mul hug. I think we were both crying. I am a better mom, teacher, and person for having the privilege of swimming for Coach Mul. My thoughts go out to his family. He will be unbelievably missed.
