Daniel "Dan" Hefter, of La Grange, Texas, passed away on August 5, 2025. Born September 2, 1963 in Milwaukee, WI to Virginia and Robert Hefter, Dan was the oldest of 3 boys and enjoyed spending every opportunity with his brothers Tom and John. Whether listening to live music or exploring great restaurants, Dan, Tom, and John were sure to connect and fuel their souls with blues, jazz, and everything in between. Dan loved getting back to Wisconsin, specifically in months where there was no snow, to visit and spend time with his mother who is still living in Menomonee Falls, Wi. His other passion was being a Grandpa. Dan was the father to one son, Nate. Nate and his wife Katie have two children, Kameron who is 14 and MaKenzie who is 10. Dan's fire to work hard was to play harder whenever Nate, Katie, Kam, and Kenzie could get to Texas, which after long winters in Wisconsin was guaranteed every March. He thoroughly loved every visit showing them all Texas has to offer. His second time in parenting came with the addition to the family of his faithful and loyal cats, Bubba and Sebastian. He was the real life Jon to Garfield x2. He would tell everyone how much his two cats loved lasagna and as a chef, he was happy to oblige.
Dan started his education at Our Lady of Sorrows Grade School in Milwaukee, WI. He was a proud Pius XI High School, Class of 1981. His exploration to always learn led him to Cardinal Stritch and eventually UW Stout where he studied Culinary and Hospitality Arts. His first experience at the reins of his restaurant career was in West Allis, Wisconsin. While working in the restaurant business, he met his best friend Lori and In 1996, Dan ventured to Texas with her, where he left his mark at Post Oak Bar & Grill "The Oaks," before showcasing his tireless work ethic at Texas One Stop and Frisch Auf! Valley Country Club. Dan was loved everywhere he went. He was never looking for trouble, just a good time, good food, good company, and a few laughs.
Dan is survived by his Mother Virginia Hefter and Brother John Hefter of Menomonee Falls, Wi, His brother Tom Hefter of Houston, Tx. His son, Nate (Katie) Del Ponte and Grandchildren Kameron and MaKenzie Del Ponte of Ripon, Wi. His sons (cats) Bubba and Sebastian of La Grange, Tx. He is also survived by many extended family and large support of friends who were chosen family in La Grange. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert.
Dan's life was defined by quick wit, sharp humor, and a love for the good things-especially good food. He often quoted Julia Child: "The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook." In memory of Dan, the family asks that you cook a good meal with friends and family while sharing fun memories and moments with those you love.
