Daniel Dale Delande, 77, of
Shadyside, OH passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024 at WVU Medicine - Wheeling Hospital in
Wheeling, WV.
Dan was born in Aetnaville, OH on January 31, 1947, a son of the late Fred and Anna (Maizlik) Delande
He was a member of St. Mary's Church
Shadyside, OH. He was a member of the Bridgeport Eagles, Bridgeport Rotary, Ohio Valley River Elks, and the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Connie "Cookie" Jafrate whom he married on September 4, 1971. Also his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Frances Delande, and his in-laws Alfonso and Rachel Jafrate.
He is survived by his daughter Gina (Brad) Holmes of
Shadyside, OH and his most cherished gifts, his grandchildren, Alexa Coggins, Anthony Coggins, Collin Holmes, and Aivreigh Holmes. He is also survived by brother-in-laws Alan (Sandy) Jafrate and Tom (Kim) Jafrate. In addition, he leaves behind nephews Don, Dave, and Darren Delande and nieces Dana Jafrate and Leanne Malik along with their families.
Dan was a proud member of the Bridgeport High School class of 1965 and was recently inducted into the Bridgeport Hall of Fame. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy and attended Ohio University (BS 1971) and University of Dayton (MS 1977). He dedicated his career to education; having been a teacher and principal for a combined 49 years at Bridgeport, Martins Ferry, and St. Joseph's Catholic Schools. Following his retirement, he had the opportunity to be a substitute teacher at Shadyside Schools where he was able to interact with his grandchildren and their friends. He truly cherished all of his students and their families that he had the chance to meet.
He loved sports; baseball and basketball in high school, softball as an adult, and of course golfing. He was an OVAC basketball official and softball umpire for both high school and college. He also worked for the Wheeling Recreation Department and was the director of adult softball leagues, umpire assigner, co-director of the Basketball Shootout, and on the OVAC All-Star Basketball Committee While sports were his passion; to play and organize, his greatest love was to watch his grandchildren in all of their sporting events and extra-curricular activities.
Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3900 Central Avenue, Shadyside Ohio on Thursday June 6, 2024 from 2-8pm and again on Friday from 10am until time of funeral service at 11am with Father Daniel Heusel as celebrant. Full military honors will be conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Honor Guard at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling WV. Graveside services and interment to follow.
