Dan was born September 14th, 1961, in Decorah, Iowa at the Smith Memorial Hospital. Dan was the son of Richard and Charlene Schmitt (Meyer). He was one of six siblings: Diane (Dave) Ungerer, Richard (Bert) Schmitt, Loren (Theresa Lou) Schmitt, Dan Schmitt (who passed away in infancy), Mary Schmitt, and Steve (Jess) Schmitt. Dan graduated in 1979 from Turkey Valley, and then went on to study Ag Mechanics at Northeast Iowa Community College. Dan never left the farm he grew up on. He had a passion for his livestock and a love for farming. Dan enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews throughout the years, whether it was working alongside them or cheering them on in their activities and sports. Dan enjoyed many different hobbies throughout his life. Some of those hobbies included collecting Oliver Tractors and riding them through parades, going to tractor pulls, watching the local races, and being a part of those races in his younger years. Dan was a very hardworking man who loved working with his hands and driving around the countryside.
He was preceded in death by his brother Dan (passed away in infancy), his mother (Charlene Schmitt) and father (Richard Schmitt).
