Danny Phillips passed away peacefully at home on January 2, 2025, in
South Bend, IN, at the age of 73. Born on September 26, 1951, in Clarksville, TN, to the late Walter and Eloise (Hicks) Phillips, Danny's warmth and humor brought joy to all who knew him.
After earning his Bachelor's degree in History and Philosophy from the University of South Carolina in 1974, Danny continued his education at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where he received his Master of Divinity in 1988 and his Master of Theology in 1990. His commitment to faith and education shaped his career and personal life profoundly.
Danny dedicated his life to serving others both in ministry and mental healthcare. His compassion and pastoral heart were felt by all he encountered. First, he put himself through college working at a psych hospital in Columbia, SC. He continued his work there until he felt called to the ministry. Pastoring in Wisconsin and Illinois brought him great joy. While pastoring at Pontiac Baptist Fellowship part time, he began working as a family therapist at Indian Oaks Academy, specifically working with teen boys. After his move to Indiana, he continued therapy work with teens at Oaklawn. His approach of using humor and concern with firm accountability brought change in so many teens. He retired from Oaklawn in 2016.
Though never returning to the pulpit full time, he did pulpit supply in Illinois, Michigan and Indiana. He later taught Sunday school at Trinity Evangelical Free Church, sharing his knowledge and love for the scriptures with the Bereans' class. Before he got sick, he led a couple of men's groups and individual sessions with those struggling with porn addiction which he found very rewarding.
On May 7, 2005, Danny married his beloved wife, Lisa Phillips, in
South Bend, IN. Their union was a testament to love, partnership, ministry and mutual respect. He is survived by his devoted wife, Lisa; his sister, Jan (Scott) Smoak, niece Kate and his brother, Michael Phillips, all of Columbia, SC and many other nieces and nephews and cousins. His family was the cornerstone of his life. Though not as often as he liked, he cherished the times he spent with them.
An avid reader, Danny often had four different books on the go, immersing himself in various genres and subjects. He loved traveling all over the country with Lisa. In his younger years, he enjoyed the challenge of golf, spending sunny afternoons on the greens, "perfecting" his swing and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow golfers. Of course, he would always say his favorite golfing partner was his wife.
Danny's sense of humor was one of his most memorable traits. He had a unique ability to find the funny in the everyday, and his laughter was infectious. Those who knew Danny will remember him for the joy he spread and the smiles he brought to their faces.
