Daphne Hartnoll (Dean) Lehman, 86, passed away peacefully on January 13. 2024, with her husband and other family members, at her side in our home in Pickerington, Ohio, and supported by the outstanding care provided by Fairhope Hospice and Palliative Professionals.
Daphne was born in and grew up in Elmira, New York, daughter of Henry T Dean and Marjorie E (Hartnoll) Dean, an immigrant from the United Kingdom.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, James E Lehman, sons Jeffrey J Lehman (wife Karla, an immigrant from Mexico) residents of Phoenix, Arizona, and Timothy S Lehman (wife Angela, an immigrant from Brazil) residents of Bethesda, Maryland; her grandsons Joshua A Lehman of Bethesda, Maryland, Maurice A Lehman of Los Angeles, California, Stefan A Lehman of Washington, DC, Isaac J Lehman of Phoenix, Arizona, and Carlos J Lehman of Phoenix, Arizona.
Preceding her in death was son Michael D Lehman, and her parents Henry and Marjorie Dean.
Daphne prided herself on helping others. She served as president of her senior class at Southside High School in Elmira and worked for years in the public library and was very active in church including intra-city church activities. Daphne also played the part of Olivia Langdon, Mark Twain's wife, also a former Elmira resident, for Elmira's Centennial Celebration. She graduated from Cortland State Teachers College and taught grades 1-3 in three different school districts in New York State. Following her marriage, she paid her husband's tuition so he could also earn a four-year college degree.
Daphne was the beloved wife, mother, granny and mother-in-law of our closely connected but widely dispersed family and was definitely the go-to person if anyone needed help or consolation. She was known for her beautiful smile that would light up any room and her kindness to everyone. She was a past member of Parkside Presbyterian Church in Reynoldsburg, and with her husband's assistance cared for her mother-in-law in our home for 12 years before she passed away at the home at age 100. She enjoyed the diversity her daughters-in-law brought to our family and was extremely proud of her sons and grandsons. Her hobbies included cooking, especially ethnic foods and cookies for sons and grandsons, extensive reading, painting and art history and especially enjoyed the many BBC series on PBS, as she cherished her UK heritage.
Memorial services will be held at the Pfiefer Woodyard Funeral Home, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, on Saturday, January 27, 2024. Memorial Service will be observed at 1 PM, following the calling hours from 12 PM (noon) to 1 PM, with Pastor Mike Brue officiating.
The burial will take place at a later date, at the Ulysses, Pennsylvania Cemetery, where her husband's Lehman ancestors are buried, which is 50 miles from the Elmira Cemetery where Daphne's ancestors are buried.
Pfeifer Woodyard Funeral Home is honored to serve the Lehman family.
