David John Sargalis, 83, of Johnstown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at St. Peter's Hospital surrounded by his family, four days from his 84th birthday.
Born on May 30, 1940, in Amsterdam, first born son of the late John and Genevieve (Kazlauskas) Sargalis. David was of the Catholic faith.
A lifelong resident of the area, David attended the one room schoolhouse across from the family farm. David then went on to attend Fonda- Fultonville Central School District.
David was a hard-working farmer for his entire life. His passion included gardening and he took great pride in this. He had many apple trees and grew beautiful flowers, an abundance of tomatoes, garlic, strawberries, cucumbers, and potatoes. His homemade pickles were loved by all. David's generosity and kindness was exuberant as he would give his vegetables away and ask for nothing in return. David loved carpentry and could fix almost anything that was put in front of him. His country Sunday afternoon rides gave him great pleasure. David had a wealth of friends; he always had good words about the people he met. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
David is survived by his sisters, Patricia Petteys, Arleen Burgess (Gene), Kathleen Yurkewecz (Barney) and Janet S. Zilka (Michael Sr.); many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his brothers, Bernard "Butch" Sargalis and Robert (Bob) Sargalis.
A private burial for David will take place at St. Casimir's Cemetery, Amsterdam. David's care has been entrusted to Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam.
Memorial donations in David's name can be made to Amen Place Soup Kitchen, 105 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, 12010 or to Sacred Heart Church, 111 Third Ave, Tribes Hill, 12177.
