David Shock Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes - Welsheimer Chapel-North from Jun. 16 to Jun. 19, 2025.

David went to the arms of Jesus on June 13, 2025. He was a faith filled man who enjoyed life to the fullest. One week before his death, he went on a cruise with his wife Wanda, his daughter Emily Ranney, his son-in-law Shannen Ranney, and his two grandchildren, Isabelle Ranney and Logan Ranney. This precious time together was an exclamation point to the end of his life.
David was born to Charles A. Shock Sr. and Emily M. (Wunsch) Shock, in 1947 in South Bend. Along with his brother, Charles A. Shock Jr. and his sister Charlene Shock Pinkerton, they attended Nuner School and John Adams High School. He graduated in 1965. David then attended Ball State University and later graduated from Indiana University South Bend after his return from his military service.
David proudly and honorably served in The U.S. Army 67th MP Company from 1967 to 1969. He served in Viet Nam from 1967 to 1968. He always had a special prayer for veterans. He joined the South Bend Police Department in 1970, serving as a patrol officer, undercover officer for the Special Operations Section and for 20 years as a supervisor on the midnight shift. But he was best known as that "Crime Stopper's Guy," Lt. Dave Shock. David put his heart and soul into helping victims of violent crime and homicide and their loved ones. He served as Vice President of Crime Stoppers International and served on the Illinois and Michigan Crime Stoppers boards
David married his wife Wanda, in 1983 and retired with Wanda in 2007. They became the happy owners of the Bed N Breakfast Registry for 9 years. David was a member of South Bend Rotary until the time of his illness, serving as president in 1996. He was selected as Optimist of the Year in 1994, and Police Officer of the Year in 2006 by the Indiana Council of Fraternal Veterans and Social Societies and other recognitions too numerous to remember. David loved traveling and never met a beach or umbrella drink he didn't like. David also enjoyed volunteering for St. Vincent de Paul for 20 years, delivering food to the homes of the needy. When he could no longer deliver food, he could be seen buying numerous packages of chicken and trying to balance the items on top of his rollator for purchase. His last chicken donation was three weeks ago.
David was a devout Catholic and loved his faith and the Lord. He was a daily Mass attendee for over 15 years until his illnesses. He died on St. Anthony de Padua's Memorial Day; his patron saint that he prayed to as a friend.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Little Flower Catholic Church. The rosary will be prayed at 1:15pm. The family is immensely grateful for Fr. Julius' loving pastoral care while David was so sick in the hospital. A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
David was fun and funny, smart, gentle and loving. He lived his life with a deep faith in God, a firm belief in service to others and joyfully celebrating sunsets with a glass of Cabernet. His life was well lived and he was loved so, so much.

I am David Shocks cousin. His mom and my dad were brother and sister. I was born 6 months after "davey". That is the only name I ever knew him with. we were the last 2 of 6 cousins. Childhood memories are precious and I had the privelege of having the best cousin anyone would ever want.
His mom Emily (auntie em) would give Davey a fine birthday party.
One year she asked me if i wanted some birthday cake- I said (just a slice) she went inside and actually brought out a plate with an actual SLICE of wood . we laughed forever and talked about it into adulthood.
we went to the same high school together. he was a senior and i was a junior. between classes we would pass one another in the hall and one day I said "WHAT'S BUZZIN CUZZIN" after a while he would also say to me "what's buzzin cuzzin" That stuck with us forever.
My best memory was that we NEVER ever fought, slapped, argued, yelled at, nor had anything but FUN.
Childhood memories - precious
I remember hugging him when he returned from miliary duty and I was so proud I was his cousin. I could go on forever but I will end by saying
"Davey, I love you, I will miss you, and some day I will ask you again " WHAT'S BUZZIN CUZZIN "

My condolences Wanda and family. Dave and I followed similar life paths: Nuner School, John Adams H.S., the military, and the SBPD. Before I retired I had the opportunity to select my replacement as the Crime Stoppers coordinator. Of the many candidates, I had no doubts he would be my choice. Dave became Mr. Crime Stoppers and made all of us proud for his sixteen years at the helm of a highly successful crime-fighting program. Crime Stoppers is still going strong today thanks to Mr. Crime Stoppers. He was one of a kind and will be missed. God bless.

I met Lt. Shock when I started working for Sears Roebuck & Co. I was a Salesperson in Men´s Clothing and he was Loss Prevention. He was always very friendly with me and started a great friendship with him. When i joined SBPD he was one of my first supervisors and was always pranking me and all I could do is laugh, When he took on CrimeStoppers several times he asked me to be in the PSA´s I made a better victim than the suspect. He was a special memory for me and will be missed Prayers for his children your loss is our loss.
