Dayton J. Cleaveland, Jr., 81, of Raquette Lake, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Wynn Hospital, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on February 3, 1944 in Rochester, NY, the son of the late Dayton and Rita (Gibbs) Cleaveland, Sr. and graduated from Indian Lake High School. After high school, Dayton proudly served his country in the US Army from 1965-1967, notably guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and Guarding JFK's Casket. On November 13, 1968, he was united in marriage to Theresa A. DeShaw in Inlet and shared a blessed union of 55 years until her passing on October 12, 2023. Dayton was employed with the NYS DOT in Indian Lake until his retirement in 1998. He was a volunteer fireman with the Raquette Lake Fire Dept, and also served as Fire Commissioner.
Dayton loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing and hunting in his earlier years. He was a NASCAR fan and cheered for his favorite drivers Gordon & Elliott. Dayton enjoyed times he spent with family and friends, baking his special treats for everyone to enjoy.
Surviving are his son, Dayton Cleaveland (Pam) lll, daughter, Tara Cleaveland (Scott Hollenbeck); grandchildren, Kayla (Ben) Courtney, Michael (Jamie) Collyer, Matt (Sally) Collyer, John ( Haylee) Collyer, Krista ( Alex) Collyer, and Madison Hollenbeck; ten great grandchildren; sisters, Joanne Naujokas and Linda (James) Rodgers; step-sisters, Paula (Martin) Harr, Holly ( Lou) Burke, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Carol Darling; step-brother, Gordon Gauvin and brothers-in-law, Roy DeShaw and Andruis Naujokas.
Dayton's family wishes to extend their gratitude to Gail Monthony who selflessly provided care to our dad, and the staff at Wynn Hospital for all their wonderful care and compassion.
There will be no public visitation. Services will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 128 Fern Ave., Old Forge.
Remembrances in Dayton's name may be made to the Raquette Lake Volunteer Fire Dept and Ambulance, 178 NY-28, Raquette Lake, NY 13436.
