SCOTT
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Deborah Louise Scott, who passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the age of 70, surrounded by the love of her family. A devoted mother, sister, and friend, she leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and gentle strength.
Born August 3, 1955, Deborah was a 1973 graduate of London High School. She went on to attend Wilberforce University, Ohio Dominican University, and earned her bachelor's degree from Capital University in May of 2009. Her professional journey reflected her heart for others – starting with a long career at Nationwide Insurance in addition to her dedication as a social worker for those undergoing rehabilitation. She later devoted her time to supporting children with special needs in educational settings, always finding joy in helping others thrive.
Service was a lifelong thread in her story. She volunteered regularly at the former Madison Elms Nursing Home, sharing her time and spirit with elders in her community. Whether in her career or her personal life, Deborah was always lending a hand or listening ear.
In her younger years, she found happiness in simple adventures with her children – afternoons in the park, spontaneous car rides, and joyful family outings that created lifelong memories. Though she claimed she didn't cook, she loved watching cooking shows and made Bob Evans her second home – where she knew the staff by name and enjoyed countless meals surrounded by family and laughter.
Her interests were uniquely hers: she once played the trombone, loved plants (but not flowers), and had a special fondness for butterflies. Getting her nails done was her treat to herself, a small joy that brought her confidence and relaxation.
In later years, Deborah faced significant health challenges including the partial amputation of her leg. She met this adversity with grace and determination, finding strength and community in her Byonic Limb Loss Support Group. Her courage inspired all who knew her.
A woman of quiet, but steady faith, she was a member of New Covenant Believers' Church in Columbus, where she found spiritual comfort and fellowship.
Her memory will live on in the stories shared at the dinner table, the flutter of butterfly wings, and the warmth of unexpected adventures. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by many.
Deborah leaves behind a strong legacy of love through her children: Harold Echols, Jessica "Cole" Echols, and Rachel (Floyd) Echols; sister Elizabeth Anne (Jimoh) Scott-Ikharo, brothers Martin (Dennis) Scott and Michael Henderson; as well as a host of other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Manuel Scott and Mabel Elizabeth "Betty" (Henderson) Scott; husband Harold Echols Sr.; siblings Mary Lou (Nick) Scott-Gambino, Madge Scott-Cameron, Kenneth Scott, and Herman Scott; grandmother Mary Lou "Nanaw" Henderson-Bayless.
Deborah's family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM in St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 11 West Center Street,
London, Ohio 43140. A funeral service will commence at 5:00 PM with Reverend Melvyn Huguely officiating.
In lieu of flowers, live plants or other sympathies are preferred by the family.
