Dennis Michael Devanney (74), "Dennie," beloved husband of Pat (Vaccari), passed away on August 13, 2024, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Dennie was the son of the late Ray and Carol Devanney. The second of nine children, he moved to Winsted in his early years. Dennie loved his adventures growing up on Platt Hill – driving around the backyard in his dad's Jeep, attending meetings at the Winchester Grange, and biking through the streets of Winchester Center with his friends. A graduate of Northwest Catholic High School, Dennie graduated from the University of Hartford with a degree in business. His professional contributions were many; he was passionate about quality control. Dennie received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the National Graduate School of Quality Management in 1999. He repeatedly received the US Department of Commerce Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Service to the Nation as a member of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Examiners.
During his high school years, Dennie met the love of his life, Patty. Throughout their 50 years of marriage, they celebrated many joys and overcame many challenges. Among their greatest joys was raising their four children and welcoming their children's spouses, followed by their 7 grandchildren, into their family.
Dennie enjoyed family vacations in Ocean City, MD. He was a life-long lover of Mickey Mouse and all things Disney related. He enjoyed sitting on his deck in his favorite rocking chair reading mystery novels with his hummingbirds aflight.
Dennie will be remembered by many as a "gentle giant "who was fiercely loyal and supportive of his children and their close friends. Dennie served as a mentor and counselor to many friends, with 'sessions' taking place in the car, on the deck, or just over hours on the phone.
The family would like to thank Dr. Talsania and the supportive staff at the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center in Torrington as well as the Yale Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven for their compassionate care throughout Dennie's treatment.
In addition to Pat, to carry on his legacy, Dennie leaves his four children and their spouses; Chris and Erin (Lalli) Devanney, Katie and Brian Connolly, Mick and Kendra (Hamel) Devanney, and Beth and Jed Otto; along with his seven grandchildren, Mazie, Keegan, Jake, Owen, Finley, Gabriela and Beckett, who he treasured. He also leaves behind his siblings; John ('Curt') Devanney, Ray ('Remi') Devanney, Pat Hotchkiss, Jen Barry, Becky Moran, Sean Devanney, Jim Devanney, Damien Devanney; as well as his cherished sisters in law, Mary Vaccari, Martha (Vaccari) Chamberlain, and Donna (Vaccari) Cady.
Friends may call on Thursday, August 15, at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 4 to 7pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 16, at St. Joseph Church, 186 Main Street, Winsted at 10am. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Dennie's memory to Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven or St. Joseph Church. The family requests that special memories of Dennie be shared via email at [email protected].

Patty,
I am so sorry to hear about Dennis. I have such fond memories of fishing and golfing with Dennis and Peter. And our many trips to Lake George. And of course the many Elks clambakes.
He was a big guy with a big heart and we shared many laughs and good times.

Denny and I were very good friends last couple of years of high school and early college. We spent a lot of time going to parties that we were not invited to, many visits to West Hartford for various functions at Northwest Catholic. He had a black and white Mercury, 1963 or 1964. I used to have to push it some times to get it started. We were really good at doing less than smart things. He was always fun to be with. He talked me into joining a Christian Folk group to sing at Sunday Mass in Winsted and Winchester. He introduced me to Bourbon.
Very happy he had a good life.
