Cherryville - Mr. Grover Donald "Big Don" Alexander, Sr., 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 17, 2024 at Atrium Health - Lincoln.
Don was born on January 1, 1935 in Gaston County, NC a son of the late Lawrence Lee Alexander and Delphia Carpenter Alexander. He was a graduate of Cherryville High School Class of 1953. Don was also graduated from Appalachian State University and was an App State baseball alumni. He was retired from Gaston County Schools after 37 years as a teacher and coach. Don was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cherryville and the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of Cherryville Masonic Lodge #505 A.F. & A.M. for over 60 years, Charlotte Scottish Rite Bodies, Oasis Shriners, Cherryville Shrine Club and a life time member of the Cherryville New Year Shooters. Don was inducted in the very first class of the Cherryville Sports Hall of Fame. He was a beloved friend to many.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Newell Quinn Alexander; a sister Joan Runyan and a brother, Ronnie Alexander.
Survivors include a son, Donnie Alexander and wife Jeanne; a daughter, Mona Beam and husband Jason; three grandchildren, Jenna Alexander Turner and husband Cody, Burgess Alexander Beam and Quinnlyn Grove Beam all of Cherryville.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Don's caregivers, Lacey and Sherry and also to Dr. Thomas R. White and the staff of Hometown Direct Care for all of the care they provided.
The family will receive friends from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the home.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at City Memorial Cemetery with Dr. Bill Lowe officiating. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Cherryville Masonic Lodge.
Burial will follow the service.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 107 W. Academy Street, Cherryville, NC 28021 or to Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Cherryville Shrine Club, 124 Harbor Point Drive, Cherryville, NC 28021.
