Shannon Turner Johnson, 55, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025, surrounded by loved ones and content that her fight was over and her battle won. Born in Cheraw, SC, she was the daughter of Patricia Turner and the late Dillon Gerrald “Jerry” Turner, Sr.

Shannon was a 1987 graduate of Cheraw High School, a 1991 graduate of Appalachian State University, and a 1993 master’s graduate from the University of South Carolina. With degrees in history and secondary education, she returned to Cheraw High School as a social studies teacher, most recently teaching Government & Economics and U.S. History. Throughout her 26-year career, she fulfilled many extracurricular roles at Cheraw High School, including yearbook coordinator, academic bowl coach, softball coach, and volleyball coach. While a CHS student herself, she was one of the first female recipients of the Meiklejohn Award, given to the school’s highest performing athlete across all sports. Recognizing and honoring female athletes became one of her greatest passions.

Shannon was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Cheraw, where she served on numerous committees. She especially enjoyed serving on the Missions and Evangelism Committee where she shared her faith through projects such as Salkehatchie, Operation Christmas Child, and Shepherd’s Child. She also served as the Director of Youth Ministries twice, continuing her passion for educating and uplifting young adults. Her unwavering faith sustained her through three battles with cancer. She met all obstacles with positivity, never complaining and fighting until the very end.

She is survived by her husband, Jeffery Johnson of McFarlan, NC; their daughter, Kathryn (Cameron) Hurst of Cheraw, SC; her mother, Patricia Turner of Cheraw, SC; her brother, Gerrald (Lib) Turner of Chesterfield, SC; her beloved in-laws of McFarlan, NC; and countless other friends and family members, all of whom loved and supported her every day.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the parlor of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, McFarlan, NC.

Shannon’s family would like to recognize and thank all the doctors, nurses, receptionists, and volunteers at the First Health Cancer Center, Pinehurst, NC, who provided exceptional care in a difficult season and became part of Shannon’s extended family.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Youth or First United Methodist Church Missions, 117 Third Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.
