Mary Ruth “Patsy” Laney Rushing, 90, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, July 25, 2025. Born in Wadesboro, NC, Patsy was the daughter of the late Clyde K. Laney, Sr. and Margaret Powell Laney. Patsy was raised in Cheraw, graduated from Cheraw High School and married Harley Jackson Rushing, Jr. She worked in various positions at Long Junior High School and Cheraw High School, eventually retiring from the Chesterfield County Economic Development Board.
Patsy loved interacting with people and made friends everywhere she went. She had her Cheraw family and her beach family, adopting many along the way. Later in life her favorite place was her beach home, with friends and family always dropping in to visit with her.
She is survived by her son, Harley Jackson (Zenda) Rushing, III of Cheraw, SC, daughters, Mary Virginia “Jenny” Rushing (Jimmy) Outen of Cheraw, SC, Margaret “Ellen” Rushing Boan of Greenville, SC, Ruth Rushing of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and Laney Ann Rushing (Danny) Young of Sumter, SC, grandchildren, Harley (Chandler) Rushing, IV, Virginia Lauren Outen, Kimberly (Billy) Howard, Blair (Miranda) Boan, Hunter (Carman) Young, and Danielle Young (fiancé, Wriston Gardner), great-grandchildren, Elle Howard, Mary Margaret Howard, Virginia Boan, Lucy Boan, Mary Boan and Jack Wyatt Rushing. Also surviving are her brother, Bill (Betty) Laney and sister-in-law, Judy Laney.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde K. Laney, Sr and Margaret Powell Laney and her brother, Clyde K. Laney, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 in the Parlor of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.
A funeral service will follow at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.
A private burial will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church, 117 Third Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.
Kiser Funeral Home has been entrusted to serve the Rushing Family.
