Donal O'Brien, III Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, 2022.
Donal C. O'Brien, III died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on November 24, 2022, after a courageous 10 year battle with a progressive neurological illness.

Don was a longtime resident of New Canaan, Connecticut, where he moved with his parents in 1959 and where he returned in 1991 with his wife, Carolyn, to raise their family. He was the eldest child and only son of Katharine and the late Donal C. O'Brien, Jr. He was educated at the New Canaan Country School and the Hotchkiss School, and a graduate of Dartmouth College, and NYU Stern School of Business.

After graduation from college, Don began his career in real estate joining the Trammel Crow Company. Over the years, he worked in brokerage, consulting, and asset management at Cushman Wakefield, CBRE, and Heitman Properties (Kennedy-Wilson), where he was a member of the firm's acquisition and disposition team. He co-founded CIT's Commercial Real Estate Group, was Executive Vice President at Collins Enterprises, and the founder of Entry Point Capital.

A passionate conservationist, Don supported numerous environmental organizations. He was most devoted to the National Wildlife Refuge Association, where he served as Board Member and its Chairman. During his tenure, he helped raise the association's endowment and public awareness. In 2015, the board established an endowment to support The O'Brien Prize, an annual award for Refuge Friends Groups, named in honor of Don for his dedication to the Association and his appreciation of the important role of Friends Groups, as ambassadors for the Refuge System.

Don served on the board of the New Canaan Country School, leading the recruitment of a new Head of School, and was President of the New Canaan Winter Club Board, where he oversaw the renovation of the beloved rink where he skated as a youth and as an adult. In 2021, the New Canaan Winter Club Award was renamed the Donal C. O'Brien, III Award, given to the Bantam Travel Hockey player who, like Don, shows a selfless devotion to the club and to the game, through leadership, spirit, and effort.

Don was an avid outdoorsman and skilled sportsman, whose special interests were upland bird and waterfowl hunting, fly fishing and surfcasting, activities he learned at an early age from his father and grandfather. He was a gifted and tenacious lifelong athlete, excelling at ice hockey, football, and lacrosse, captaining all three of these varsity teams at the Hotchkiss School and continuing to play hockey at Dartmouth College, where he twice joined his team at the NCAA Frozen Four. He later played in the European Pro League and with the St. Nick's Hockey Club.

His favorite activities included skating with his many friends at the New Canaan Winter Club, salmon and trout fishing in the solitude of rivers, upland bird hunting in New England with his beloved dogs, and fishing from his boat with his family on Nantucket Sound. In the last active years of his life, he chose to spend time in places where he could fish and be in the company of his family and close friends.

Don embraced his pursuits and continued to strive for more knowledge and improved skill, never settling on what he had accomplished or mastered. Without bravado, he had the ability to share his talents and his deep interests to elevate and enrich the experience of others. Whether volunteering his time, playing a sport, working in business, or in the company of his friends and family, Don was a leader and trusted friend, who led by example through dedicated hard work, determination, and humble service. Don's legacy is the impact he had on the people he knew and on those with whom he worked and played. Through his quiet leadership and modesty, he demonstrated a life of integrity and was an example to many.

Don is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carolyn O'Brien; a son, Donal C. O'Brien IV; a daughter, Elinore O'Brien; mother, Katharine O'Brien; three sisters and their spouses: Connan and Andy Ashforth, Kit and Rob Rohn, and Carrie and Bob Thomas; nine nephews and nieces; two grand nephews and one grand niece; and countless friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, on December 9, 2022, at The First Presbyterian Church, New Canaan, CT. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the National Wildlife Refuge Association. Donal Clare O'Brien, III

I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Don in the last six months of his life. From the second we met I knew he was perhaps the most special person I´d ever met. I loved sitting outside in nature with him, clearly in his element, taking in the birds, trees and whatever insects dropped by. When Carolyn would bring out the dogs, his time in nature reached perfection, and you just knew he was deeply appreciative of both nature and the boundless love that surrounded him. Some people you meet in life change your life in some way, this was Don. An extraordinary man who lived so beautifully and seemed to appreciated everything he´d been given.

Don was a dedicated, warm, and funny colleague for many years on the Refuge Association's board, and an admirable chair for a long and crucial time. I valued his insights and friendship at our meetings, and my wife and I enjoyed his company very much when we hosted Don a couple of times, while our hound immediately took to him. We miss him, and we mourn his family's loss.

Dear Carolyn,
Given his devotion to his family and his passion for the other things he loved and enjoyed Don was a role model not only for the younger set but for those his age as well. Achieving that level of admiration is the sure sign of a life well lived, no doubt lovingly supported in all his endeavors by his wife and close family. Although we didn´t see each other much during his illness, each of our too few encounters was a treat for me as I admired his courage and quite smile. I hope the time will soon come when you all remember him with a smile on your faces as he truly was a great guy.

One of the all-time great guys and teammates. Donnie joined the lacrosse team each year immediately upon the conclusion of the hockey season at Dartmouth and was immediately a valuable battler in the middle of the field...and a terrific, fun guy off the field as well. I regret not having stayed in touch over the years, but send my very best wishes to his family. -Charlie Moore, D'80

I had the great pleasure of fishing with Donnie out of the Pleasant Bay Bonefish Lodge on South Andros. We fished that day on the West side of the island at a spot called Single Mangrove Flat. I watched in amazement as Donnie cast again and again beautifully and accurately into a stiff 25-30 mph (honestly 25-30 mph!) wind. I was impressed with Donnie's accuracy out to 50-60 feet and noted his smooth casting and effortless stroke. But what really made the scene was when I turned to see the guide high on the poling platform simply shaking his head in surprise, envy and genuine delight in watching a master angler at work.
And, before we left the flat Donnie was generous enough to spruce up my needy cast. He improved my preformance all the way out to 25 feet!!
I feel honored to have fished with and spent 7 hours talking with a super human being. I miss Donnie often.

Don was a shy sophomore when I proctored and played hockey with him at Hotchkiss. We played for my father Blair who until his passing regarded Don as one of the most gifted athletes and kindest human beings to pass through the main gates at the Kiss. All of the Torrey’s send our sincere condolences.
