Donald Lee Opell was born in Vincennes on April 6, 1929. He passed away on January 17, 2024. Don graduated from Lincoln High School in the class of 1947. Upon graduation he worked as a baker alongside his father. Together they owned Opell's Pastry Shop on North Second Street. After selling the bakery in the late 1960's, Don worked at Knox County Health Department for 29 years. In retirement, Don volunteered for many causes, including Generations.
Don married Marilyn Shepherd on June 6, 1954. Don was a lifelong member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, serving in a number of roles. For many years he was Bethany's representative to Indiana's Presbytery. Don's favorite hobbies were baking and singing. He enjoyed singing at church and barber shop singing and was a long-time member of the Hoosier Harmonizers. From 1951 to 1953 Don served in the Korean War, and in 2016 he enjoyed participating in an Honor Flight to Washington DC, accompanied by his son, Dan. Don's delight was participating in church activities. He adored his wife and family. He was a humble Christian man and he was kind to everyone. He enjoyed baking and making meals for many in Vincennes. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember fondly the cakes he personalized for them each birthday.
Don is survived by sons Daniel (Teri) of Newburgh, Douglas (Beth) of Indianapolis and five (5) grandchildren, Lynsey Opell (Boonville), Aaron (Emily) of Newburgh, Ryan (Maura) of Fresno, CA, Alex (Bloomington, IN), and Scott (Brooklyn, NY); four great-grandchildren Dylan, Vincent, Ashton and Maeve. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn; his parents Clarence and Merna (McKnight) Opell; his two sisters Dorothy Dognaux and Norma Rose Phillips; one son David Shepherd Opell and one nephew Richard Dognaux.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin immediately after visitation at 2:00 pm with Ann Miller and Rusty Thorne officiating. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the care of Don.
