Donald M. Sonntag, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the age of 94. Born in Erie, PA, he was the son of the late William and Marie (Eichenlaub) Sonntag.
Don graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1948, where he formed many lifelong friendships. He went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1952 and became a licensed Pennsylvania Professional Engineer, a distinction he proudly held for 45 years.
In his early career, Don worked as a staff engineer for Whiticure Engineering and Johnson, Gray, and Associates. He was a partner in the structural engineering firm Sonntag, Amthor & Schmieder.
In May of 1955, Don married Elizabeth "Betty" McNulty, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Together, they raised six children and were long-time members of Saint George Church, where Don served as an usher, Eucharistic Minister, and a dedicated Knight of Columbus. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He was also an avid fan of Penn State football.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth; his grandson, Philip Sonntag; and his sister, Rose Heberlein. He is survived by his six children: David (Diane) Sonntag, John (Joan) Sonntag, Thomas (Marsha) Sonntag, Kathleen (William) Masek, Mary Ann (John) Hess, and Mark (Kristi) Sonntag. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Ryan Allison, Joseph and Emily Sonntag, Todd and Andrew Sonntag and Halley Sonntag, Alexandra and Jacqueline Masek, Matthew and Catherine Hess, Morgan Sonntag and four great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry forward his legacy.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. George Catholic Church at 12:00 noon. Burial will be private in Calvary Cemetery.
