Donald Roger Van Buskirk, known affectionately as Don by his loved ones, was a beacon of wisdom, humor, and love. Born on October 28, 1935, in Milwaukee, WI. Don was a man whose life was rich with experiences and relationships that reflected his Christian faith. He passed away on November 15, 2025, in Brookfield, WI.
Family was the cornerstone of Don's life. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Judith Van Buskirk, and a loving father to his daughters, Elizabeth (Wayne) Deckman, Margo (James) Blomquist, and Megan (Roarke) Donnelly. His grandchildren - Max, Christian, Madeline, Liam, Morgan, and Amelia - received his love, memorable stories, and the wisdom he offered during their moments together.
Don spent his early years in Milwaukee, graduating from Washington High School in 1954. His love of learning led him to the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1961. He was a proud member of the Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity. He later earned a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
Don's dedication to service started with his time in the Army, where he served from April 1957 to January 1959 in Arlington, VA, and Washington, D.C. He often spoke of these years with pride, sharing the friendships he made, the lessons he learned, and the memorable experiences that stayed with him throughout his life.
After his military service, Don embarked on a remarkable 31-year career dedicated to the educational well-being of young people. He began teaching English at Brookfield Central High School in 1969, where he touched the lives of many students with his wit and wisdom. His leadership skills shone through as he became an Assistant Principal and then Principal at Wisconsin Hills Middle School. In the early 1980s, he worked in a district office position, and in 1985, he became the Principal at Elmbrook Middle School, where he served until his retirement in 1997. Don's legacy in education is one of dedication, inspiration, and unwavering support for his students and colleagues.
Don's life was a testament to his Christian faith, which he lived out daily through his actions and his commitment to his church. He enjoyed reading, especially history books about World War II. His laughter and storytelling were the heart of many gatherings, and his wise counsel was sought after by friends and family alike.
As we celebrate Don's life, we remember a man who was a pillar of strength, a source of laughter, and a guiding light to all who were blessed to know him. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who loved him, and his memory will be cherished forever.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., followed immediately by the funeral service, both at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 1615 N. Wauwatosa Ave, Wauwatosa, WI 53213.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church or a memorial of your choice.
