Lori L. Schappell and Dori A. Schappell, conjoined twins, 62, of Reading, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Born in West Reading, they were the daughters of Franklin G. Schappell, Perry Twp.; and the late Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell. Lori and Dori both graduated from the Hiram G. Andrew's Center. They were previously employed at the Reading Hospital. As of 2022, Lori and Dori were the oldest living conjoined twins in the world. Over the years, they have appeared in many documentaries and talk shows; as well as appearing in an episode of Nip/Tuck. It was very important for Lori and Dori to live as independently as possible. Since the age of 24, they have maintained their own residence and have traveled extensively. Dori had a career as a country singer, performing throughout the United States; and Lori is a trophy-winning bowler. Lori and Dori cared about others and gave of their time for many years at the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon.
Surviving in addition to their father are six siblings: Rodney F. Schappell, Cumru Twp.; Denise E. Schappell, Perry Twp.; Dennis J. Schappell, husband of Lisa, Centre Twp.; Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers, companion of Deric Henn, Tilden Twp.; Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill, wife of Dale, Geneva, OH; and Gregory C. Schappell, husband of Tulsa, Shoemakersville; several nieces and nephews; uncle: Sam Reppert; two aunts: Shirley Hockman and Rosetta Reppert; and an extended family of friends.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Leesport, is in charge of arrangements. For online condolences, please visit, www.leibenspergerfuneralhomes.com.

I've never met them or even heard of them while they were alive, but from what I've read Lori and George were very special people and the world will be a little dimmer without them in it.

I had the pleasure of being Lori and George´s visiting nurse for several years. They were both wonderful individuals and I always enjoyed my visits. Through adversity and perseverance, they were an inspiration to all who knew them. The world will be a little less bright without each of them in it. Thank you both for allowing me a personal glimpse into your life that you lived with strength, bravery, and courage.

I remember seeing Lori and George out and about in town when I was a child. They were always so nice, and I've enjoyed keeping up with what they've been doing. They accomplished so much in their lives, and the world will be lesser without them.

Lori and Dori were two very special people. I shared many visits with them discussing not only health issues but their outlook on life. I followed, as did many their careers from Reading to Nashville to Hollywood and beyond. One thing was always clear, they were determined to live the fullest life that they could and they did. I remember once after they became more famous through documentaries as well as their country western and television careers, they were walking through Reading when a tour bus drove by and everyone on the bus got out and shook their hands. I could say much more but will just add that they were an example and a true inspiration to so many that in spite of circumstances, life is what we make of it and attitude and dreams make all the
difference. We´ll truly miss them.

I met Dori many years ago and I was inspired by her outlook on life. We chatted for a while and I told her how much I had enjoyed respectful documentary I had seen years before. She had a great sense of humor and we laughed a lot. Now she's in Heaven with her parents and all those who loved her.
