Mrs. Doris Evelyn Tate, age 89, of
Rome, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord on July 4, 2025, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Cherokee County, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Golden Clarence Little and Thelma Hasty Little. She graduated from Canton High School in 1953 and from Berry College in 1957. She married her college classmate, C.L. Tate, on July 28, 1957, in Barnwell Chapel on the Berry College campus. Well-loved and respected as an educator, Mrs. Tate taught Business Education at Model High School from 1966 to 1993. She also taught at Rockmart High School for one year and at Coosa Valley Tech for a short time. She obtained her office experience in the Agronomy Department at the University of Georgia and in the Office of the Assistant to the President at Berry College. Doris was a Godly woman and devoted Christian. She was an active member of West Rome Baptist Church for 44 years where she taught Sunday School for most of her time there. She was active in supporting missionaries with her giving and prayers, and that she enjoyed singing in choirs at both West Rome Baptist and Fellowship churches.
She has been a member at Fellowship Baptist Church since 2008.
She was also known for her cooking and baking and always expressed her love through her work in the kitchen, sharing dishes and casseroles with her friends and family, making sure they knew she was thinking of them.
Mrs. Tate is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, C.L. Tate; her father, Golden C. Little (1937); her mother, Thelma Hasty Little Cornelison; her toddler brother, Clarence Little; her stepfather, J. Luther Cornelison; her half-sister, Ruth Cornelison Medford and her husband Alvin Melford; step-brothers, Arvine Cornelison and Rembert Cornelison and his wife Virginia Cornelison; and step-sisters, Ovalee Thacker and Marjorie Albertson and her husband Billy Albertson.
Those left behind to cherish and honor her memory are a son, Mark Tate and his wife Melanie; a daughter, Sylvia Chesser and her husband Jay; her granddaughter and light of her life, Jazzmine "Jazz" Loreto; nieces, Jean Evans, Bonnie Medford, Denise Huntley, and Janet Bobeng and her husband Greg; nephews, Eric Waters and his wife Kathy; Larry Thacker and his wife Sandra, Steve Cornelison and his wife Donna; her great-nieces, Alexis Evans and Kate McKinney; and great-nephews, Steven Evans and William Waters.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 1:00pm, in the chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, with pastor Brady Fortenberry officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Greg Bobeng, Eric Waters, and Steven Evans. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
