Douglas H. Benson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025, at his cherished vacation home in Florida. He was 76 years old. Doug was born on October 31, 1948, in West Harrison, Indiana, to James and Marcella (nee Hodges) Benson.
From a young age, Doug exhibited a passion for baseball, showcasing his talent as a left-handed pitcher. His determination and strong will were evident early on, as he often found himself next to the coach, eager to take the mound. After graduating from William Henry Harrison High School, Doug pursued his education at Ball State University, where he honed his problem-solving skills that would later define his successful career in engineering.
Doug's professional journey began at Procter & Gamble, where his supervisors quickly recognized his exceptional knowledge and unwavering determination. Over the years, he earned the trust of his colleagues and advanced to the position of Senior Engineer, leaving behind a legacy of innovation with multiple patents to his name.
However, it was his family that brought Doug the greatest joy. He met the love of his life, Patricia Baker, in a serendipitous encounter during a sleepover at his parents home with his sister Marcie. Their love story blossomed, culminating in their marriage on September 19, 1970. Together, they raised four beautiful daughters: Shelly, Joei, Kristin, and Kayce. Doug was a devoted father, always present to support his daughters through life's challenges, whether it was getting their hair done or learning the intricacies of soccer, a sport he initially found perplexing. His love for his girls was boundless, and he willingly traded in his softball glove to become an assistant coach, demonstrating his commitment to their happiness and growth.
Doug's passion for old cars was legendary; he often returned from family trips with new vehicles, each acquisition accompanied by a story that would be shared for generations. He was a true master of his craft, embodying the spirit of a "Jack of all trades" while excelling in everything he pursued.
A lover of nature, Doug found joy in feeding the birds, particularly hummingbirds, whose protective nature resonated with his own. He was a steadfast protector of his family, much like the male hummingbirds he admired.
Doug leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, cherished by his devoted wife of 54 years, Patricia (nee Baker) Benson; his beautiful daughters: Shelly (Mike Majer) Benson, Joei (Brian) Morgan, Kristin Benson, and Kayce (Mat) Daugherty; and his adored grandchildren: Bryson Spaulding, Halen, & Christopher Graycen Taber, Maximus, Samson, Alexander & Adeline Daugherty, Anthony and Olivia Morgan. He is also survived by his sister, Marcie Horner, and the Baker In-laws, including Larry (Judy), Sheila, Beverly, Alma, Tina (Ken), Kimberly, Rod (Lisa), along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marcella (nee Hodges) Benson; his infant son, Douglas Jr. Benson; and siblings: Carol Ziegler, Marion Kraus, Shirley Mandary, Jim & John Benson.
Visitation will be held at Brater Winter Funeral Home in Harrison on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 10 AM until the time of Doug's Celebration of Life at 12 PM, officiated by Pastor Mark Garrett. Burial will follow at Glen Haven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Mike Rowe Works, supporting men and women who choose trade school. More information can be found at www.mikeroweworks.org. A funeral home representative will be available during the visitation to accept memorials.
Doug's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy of love, determination, and laughter will continue to inspire future generations.
