Edmund F. Leighton Jr., of Mendon, passed away on August 30, 2025, at the age of 72, surrounded by his loving family at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, MA. Born in Somerville, MA, Ed was the beloved son of the late Edmund F. Leighton Sr. and Dorothy E. (Allen) Leighton.
As a young boy Ed lived in Brighton, MA and loved to reminisce about his friends, the Mary Lyon elementary school and riding his bike all around the neighborhood. In middle school his family moved to Bellingham, MA where he graduated from Bellingham High School. At the age of 17 he was selected to work for the FBI in Washington, D.C. in a program for graduating seniors. After completing the year long program he returned to his roots, working at Stop & Shop in Milford and Framingham, following in his father's footsteps. His career highlight was serving as a Mendon Police Officer, where he cherished the opportunity to interact with and serve his community which he lived in for over fifty years.
Known for his dry sense of humor and tireless work ethic, Ed could never sit still. His hobbies included fishing, spending time at the ocean, doing yardwork and fixing anything that needed repair. He was also passionate about music and played the drums. Some of Ed's happiest memories were spent at his seasonal camper at Camp Eaton in York Beach, ME and as a child taking road trips with his father to visit his aunt in Searsmont, ME where he would pick blueberries and fish in the pond behind her house. Ed also loved his two fur grand puppies Dixie and Rip and looked forward to hearing about their daily mischief.
Ed is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer M. (Leighton) Napolitano, and son-in-law Daniel R. Napolitano of West Wareham, MA; sister, Barbara A. (Leighton) Moyer, and brother-in-law Charles W. Moyer of Auburn, MA; nephew and godson, Matthew L. Moyer of Auburn, MA; former spouse of 21 years, Maryellen (Person) Leighton; and partner Jeffrey Octeau of Smithfield, RI; great-nephew, Joseph J. Smith III; great-niece, Audrey E. Smith of Southbridge, MA; and step-grandson, Vincent M. Napolitano; and partner, Sophia Meuse of Marshfield, MA. He was preceded in death by his niece, Elizabeth A. (Moyer) Smith.
