Newsoms - Edward "Eddie" Raleigh O'Berry Jr. went to his eternal home on March 19, 2025, at the age of 78. He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him and experienced his kind and fun-loving soul.
Born March 19, 1947, in Franklin, Southampton County, VA, Eddie lived a full life growing up in the town of Newsoms making countless friends and family memories on East Depot Street and later in life at the O'Berry home on S. Main Street. He was a 1965 graduate of Southampton High School, where he played baseball and met who would later become his wife and mother to his son. Eddie proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Army as a military policeman from 1966-1968 and was Honorably discharged at the rank of E5. After returning home he started a long-standing career with the phone company and was soon transferred to Caroline County, VA where he raised and provided for his family, all the while, making countless memories and friends along the way. After a fruitful 35 plus year career, he retired and moved back to Newsoms to be with family and childhood friends while caring for his aging mother. He was an avid outdoorsman, one heck of a ball player and golfer, dancer, and last and but not least, a fun-loving good time. He enjoyed charity events and being around people as much as possible, even in his decline. He carried a positive aura and projected that onto everyone he encountered. Eddie was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church, Newsoms Hunt Club, and Cypress Cove Country Club in support of his enduring faith and hobbies.
Eddie is survived by his loving son, Louis Edward O'Berry (Tiffany); sisters, Kay O'Berry Black (Bill) and Sandra O'Berry Brown; and his ex-wife and forever friend, Julia L. O'Berry; nieces, Suzanne Scott, Bonny Bracy (Kevin), Christine Lucasti, and Helena Lucasti; and several great nieces and nephews. He was welcomed to eternal rest by his mother, Hilda Holland O'Berry and his father, Edward Raleigh O'Berry Sr., along with many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Special gratitude is expressed to the staff at Courtland Healthcare & Rehabilitation and among all who contributed to his care and wellbeing over the last six plus years.
The family will receive friends Friday, April 4, 2025, at Newsoms United Methodist Church, 29193 S. Main Street in Newsoms, VA from 2pm-3pm with a memorial service and reception immediately following at the church. In leu of flowers, the family encourages donations in remembrance of Eddie to Newsoms United Methodist Church, Newsoms Vol. Fire Dept., and the Newsoms Athletic Association.
