Edward Howard Short, known affectionately to many as Ed, Eddie, or Sensei Ed, tragically passed away on August 14th, 2025. Born on September 27th, 1953, in Seaford, DE, Ed spent his life embodying the spirit of adventure and dedication. His kind and inspiring nature left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. In his younger years, Ed trained as a Military Intelligence Coordinator and served 3 years in the Army in the early 1970's, which included time in The Republic of Vietnam, recognized by the award of the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry (with Palm Leaf device). After he was honorably discharged, he went on to work as a police officer for the Milsboro, Seaford, Blades, and Bridgeville police departments. After becoming a resident of Laurel, Delaware, he married the love of his life, Sheri Wendeler-Short, on February 24th, 1983 –embarking on a 42 year journey together filled with love, martial arts, music, and a home for many cherished pets. The two welcomed their daughter, Bethany Short, on March 13th, 1988.

Professionally, Ed was a USPA licensed skydiving instructor and FAA licensed senior parachute rigger, while also serving as a courier for Labcorp. However, what mattered most to Ed was shepherding others to achieve their full potential. His dedicated heart stretched beyond his work, reaching every aspect of his life, especially his family. He is survived by his wife, Sheri Wendeler-Short, his daughter Bethany Short and son-in-law Martín Ortiz, and his brother Steve Short and sister-in-law Denise Short. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Virginia Short, and his sister, Susan Hastings.

Ed was a modern-day paladin, and his life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to those he loved and taught. His humble nature and inquisitive spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In honor of Ed's life and his impact on so many, we invite you to share your memories and upload photos to his memorial page. Your stories and pictures will serve as a beautiful testament to a life well-lived of a man deeply loved.
