Edward C. Sweeney Jr., 86, of Auburn and formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2025, after a battle with lung cancer.
Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose warmth and humor touched everyone he met. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anita C. Sweeney (St. Onge), and is survived by his children, Edward C. Sweeney III ("Buzzy") and his wife, Cherrie, of Princeton, and Kathleen Stanley and her husband, Robert, of Charlton. He also leaves a brother, Robert Sweeney of Leicester, and four cherished grandchildren: Ryla Aneta of Moosup, CT, Cole Stanley of Waltham, and Abigael and Nevin Sweeney of Princeton, along with a large circle of nieces, nephews, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Born in Worcester to Edward and Mary (Colbert) Sweeney, Ed served proudly in the Army and National Guard. An avid antique dealer who shared his love of history and treasures with others, setting up at Brimfield and maintaining a space at Jeffreys Antiques. For over 15 years, he brought joy to others through Meals on Wheels, often singing as he delivered meals.
Ed had a lifelong love of card games, especially cribbage and pitch, and delighted in teaching anyone willing to learn. Card games with friends and at the Auburn Senior Center, he had a way of making those around him feel loved and appreciated.
Even after his diagnosis, Ed approached life with his resilience and spirit. He continued playing cards, enjoying cribbage, and visiting Foxwoods. A true fighter, Ed lived fully, leaving a lasting imprint on everyone who knew him.
Calling hours will be held from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at Britton Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. A private service will be held for the family.
