Elizabeth Imogene Etheredge Woolley, age 96, of Huntsville, AL, passed away Friday, October 27, 2023, at Regency Retirement Village in Huntsville. Graveside services and burial will be Friday, November 3, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.
She was preceded by her parents, Walter and Julia; her husband, George; her daughters, Beth and Alana.
Gene is survived by her son, George Herschel Woolley, Junior (Marsha); grandchildren, Laura (Andy) Hardin, Meredith (Jon) Jackson, Joel Rowland, Caryn Woolley, Brooke (Chad) Frost, Jon (Emily) Woolley, and Meg Sutton; as well as fifteen great grandchildren.
"Gene", as she was known through her life, was born on July 13, 1927, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Walter Earl and Julia Edna Etheredge. She lived the majority of her life in Tuscaloosa, graduating from high school.
Gene was married to George Herschel Woolley on December 17, 1943. George served during WWII while Gene completed school. When he returned from the war, they began their family and had three children, Herschel, Beth, and Alana.
Gene was employed by the Tuscaloosa County School System. She was an integral part of the business offices of Holt High School and later Hillcrest High School, where she was working at the time of her retirement. Gene and George were avid travelers and visited many different countries before and after retirement. However, one place that truly held her heart is Gulf Shores, Alabama, where she has been a property owner for several decades.
Gene was a long time and active member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa and spent many years serving in many capacities at Hopewell.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations in Gene's honor be made to the WEDC's Women Honoring Women, Downtown Rescue Mission, Food Bank of North Alabama, or Food Bank of West Alabama.
