Ellen Elizabeth Weems

Ellen Elizabeth Shirley Weems, 72, of Hoover Alabama passed away on August 5, 2024 after a two-year battle with multiple myeloma.
Ellen was born in Corinth, Mississippi on March 26, 1952 and spent most of her youth in Florence, AL. She attended Bradshaw High School in Florence, Alabama and enjoyed choir and band where she played the flute. She received her undergraduate degree from Samford University in Birmingham, where she studied music and piano and was in a capella choir and the Kappa Delta Sorority. She then earned her masters in music specializing in the Orff method at Memphis State University. Ellen taught music for the rest of her career first in Memphis and then in Birmingham.
Ellen was a very gifted pianist and loved music. She shared her love of music with many as she taught piano at several public and private schools including Birmingham Southern College of Piano Conservatory and The Highlands School. She also taught private lessons in her home. Ellen had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of the Over the Mountain Festival Community Choral Group. She was also the piano accompanist for Red Mountain Theater, Leeds Community Theater and The Jewish Community Center Theater.
Ellen was a joy to be around. She always made others smile with her comforting and kind personality. She was caring to others and made sure that others felt loved and supported. She had a way of finding the positive in every situation. Ellen loved preparing desserts and enjoyed family dinners. She treasured time with her family, especially with her young grandson Deluca who always put a smile on her face.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Michael Ray Weems, whom she married on June 7,1986. They were active members of Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover. Together they enjoyed attending various musical events.
Ellen is also survived by their son, Jonathan Michael Weems; son and daughter-in-law, William Taylor and Jordan Weems; sister, Lee Shirley Parrott (Charles); grandson, Deluca Thomas Weems, as well as a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Ellen is preceded in death by her parents Robert "Bob" Shirley and Betty Sweat Shirley.
The visitation will be held Friday, August 9th from 10-11 am at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover, Alabama. The service will begin at 11 am in the chapel followed by a graveside service at Jefferson Memorial Gardens South.
