Emily Louise Scott Bowen (known throughout her life as "Cis") who resided at Sunrise of Cary died Tuesday June 27, 2023 after a period of declining health. Cis was 96. Born in Atlantic City NJ, she was the daughter of Lewis Pennington Scott – the longtime Mayor of Margate NJ, and Florence Fisher.
Cis grew up in Marven Gardens – the housing development made famous as one of the prized properties on the Monopoly board – but with a mis-spelling as she loved to point out. After marrying Dr John Raymond Bowen, the family lived in Linwood NJ for several years before moving to Moorestown NJ. where they spent the next 13 years. While there she was an active member of the Altar Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church and a big supporter of all her children's activities. The family then moved to Midlothian VA where she continued her Altar Guild service with St Paul's Episcopal Church. Eventually moving to Pinehurst NC where she spent many days travelling to Raleigh to become a docent at the NC Museum of Art. In addition to her love of the arts, Cis loved the ocean and the water, in general - spending many summers at the family retreat at Beasley's Point NJ, and later in life enjoying the many beaches of NC. And she enjoyed swimming laps in the family pool at dusk for years. She had a great sense of humor and leaves many unforgettable sayings such as her rendition of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing": " God and sinners wrecked our style!"
Cis was a devoted wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband John and is survived by her four children: John and his wife Karin of Newtown Square PA, Bob and his wife Cathy of Dagsboro DE, Sue Stevens and her husband Mike of Morrisville NC and Allison Breedlove and her husband Steve also of Morrisville, in addition to 6 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the NC Museum of Art in CISs' memory. The family would also like to thank the staff of Sunrise of Cary for the past six years and then Life Transitions and Hospice for their care and special attention over the past few months.
