Eric Schmitt Obituary
Eric Michael Schmitt, Age 43 of Columbus, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 21, 2025. He was born on February 16TH, 1981 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the beloved son of Cheryl Schmitt and David Schmitt (deceased), a big brother to Kevin Schmitt, a brother-in-law to Kristen Schmitt and an uncle to his niece Kylie Schmitt.
Eric grew up on the Southside of Columbus, attended St. Leo's Catholic School from Kindergarten - 8TH grade. He then went to Bishop Ready High School for two years and graduated from South High School in June of 1999, with a 5.0 GPA. Eric was well-known for his high intelligence, laid back demeanor and his love for writing.
After high school graduation, Eric attended The Ohio State University, always living on campus from his first two years in the dorms, until his last two years at the 68'er on East 11th Avenue. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications in 2005.
Following his graduation from OSU, Eric worked for Nationwide Insurance Company for 18 years up until his death. Eric was held to the highest regards by his colleagues, who stated that he inspired others, showed that one person can make a difference and worked forward with a mission of extraordinary service.
Eric was a well-known baseball player and athlete, playing baseball from an early age through high school. He continued that love for sports after high school, playing in multiple softball leagues at Berliner Park and intramural softball at OSU. Eric also found an attraction to the game of pool, playing in leagues at his favorite pool hall Suzi-Cue, in the heart of OSU campus, where Eric befriended so many people. Eric loved camping and canoeing in the Hocking Hills with his family and friends from his childhood throughout his adult years.
Eric had many people who admired him and looked up to him throughout his life. Notably his younger brother Kevin may have been his biggest fan from when they were kids. He always wanted to be where he was, doing what he was doing, and trying to mimic him constantly. He was an amazing big brother, son, uncle, and friend to so many. He is leaving behind so many people who have enjoyed having him in their lives from cousins, aunts, uncles, and lifelong friends (Matt Tschirner, Bryan Stewart, Ross O'Reilly and all the southenders he has come in contact with.) Most notably, his life meant so much to his mother Cheryl. Heartbroken is not the word that can describe this sudden loss.
A celebration of Eric's life will be held on February 1, 2025, at O.R. Woodyard Funeral Company from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM followed by a short service at 4:00 PM.
