Farouk Kassir

Farouk Kassir, 91, passed away Tuesday, February 6th. He was a beloved father, uncle, and friend to so many who will miss his presence. He was born on March 24, 1932, in Baghdad, Iraq as the fourth of eight children to Daoud and Sabiha Kassir. After his secondary education in Iraq, Farouk moved to the U.S. to attend South Dakota University. He then worked in California as an engineer for Bechtel and married Kay Karim. After the birth of their first son, Farouk and Kay made the difficult decision to return to Iraq to care for his parents. Known for his intelligence and work ethic, Farouk was hired as the chief project manager for the construction of giant grain silos for the Iraqi Agriculture Department.
Farouk and his family moved to Virginia Beach in 1979 with the help of his brother, Nabil. Together they owned Chicho's Pizza. Farouk used his engineering skills to deliver the tastiest and most consistent pizza in Virginia Beach.
More than his accomplishments, Farouk was known for his enduring kindness and humility. Farouk's greatest joy was to visit those who were sick and care for others, especially those suffering from war. He was an esteemed member of the over-the-hill gang at Wareing's Gym, as well as numerous local volunteer organizations. In his latter years, he made many friends at his residence at the First Colonial Inn. The family extends their gratitude to the First Colonial Inn for their unwavering care.
Farouk is survived by his brother, Nabil Kassir (Debbi), sons David Kassir (Avisha) and Omar Kassir (Diane), and cousins Wally Kassir and Kal Kassir (Joni). He is also survived by four grandchildren and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 17th at 10:00AM at H.D. Oliver Funeral, 2002 Laskin Rd., Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honor Farouk's legacy by donating to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, vbvrs.org.
