Fred Heuvel passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 9, 2024,
at the age of 81.
Born on November 25, 1943, Fred was the second of six children born to Johannes (Jan) and Cornelia Heuvel in Rotterdam, Holland. In 1955, his family immigrated to New York. From there, Fred's father accepted Colonial Williamsburg's position as the master cabinet maker. It was in Williamsburg where Fred began his life-long passion and golf career, beginning as a caddy at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
Years later, the U.S. Army drafted Fred to support the Vietnam War, and he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During his time as a soldier, he also began working at Awase Meadows Golf Club, eventually becoming their head golf professional. Here, he also met the love of his life Shoko, his wife of 56 years.
Several years after they welcomed their two sons, Christopher and Allen, into the world, they moved to the United States. Fred took a position continuing as an Army civilian to manage Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Here he officially became PGA certified, passing his written and playing ability tests. This milestone perfectly captured his passion and commitment to his profession and was later named a lifetime member of the Professional Golf Association (PGA). About eight years later, Fred was offered a tremendous opportunity to oversee the golf courses at Fort Meade in Maryland. These courses were the busiest Army courses in the entire continental United States throughout his tenure. Fred took the position and he and his family set off to reside in their forever home in Odenton, Maryland. From there he took over as the Director of Golf Operations and the courses flourished under his lead until his retirement in 2008.
In retirement, Fred enjoyed traveling the world, gathering with friends and family, and watching his four grandkids grow. He also focused on teaching and providing lessons at courses like Andrews Air Force Base, all while inspiring others to also find love for the game.
Beyond his superb leadership, management, and oversight of golf operations throughout his career, Fred always stayed true to his passion of promoting the game. Through keen-eye-observations of correct swings, footing and follow throughs, Fred brought many want-to-be golfers under his tutelage into the world of golf. Sons, grandchildren, in-laws, Army personnel, and ordinary enthusiasts were all trained with patience, humor and kindness: That was Fred.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, brother John, and sister Corrie. He is survived by his wife Shoko, his sisters Gonnie Lewis (Howard), Tina Stoll (Eric), brother Jan Heuvel (Lisa), son Chris and his children, Jacob and Alex, and son Allen (Elise), and their children, Sydney and Trevor, as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
A service for Fred will be held on Saturday, January 11th from 1:00-3:00pm at Hardesty Funeral Home P.A. (851 Annapolis Road, Gambrills, Maryland 21054).

I will always have fond memories of my friend and mentor Fred Heuvel. He promoted me to Business Manager along the way and our working relationship and friendship only got better.

We played a lot of golf together and that´s when we our comradery flourished. I used to joke with him about not being able to sleep at night thinking about playing against him the next day...we played for $1 lol.

Fred brought everyone together, his most valuable asset. I loved the man, his family, and all the wonderful people he brought into my life.

My husband and Fred met years ago when Fred was the Pro at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs. My husband asked Fred if he would give me golf lessons. I had never played anything but Putt Putt golf. Fred agreed, and my first day with Fred, he sensed I was a little nervous. Fred looked at me and said, "Now the first thing I want you to do, is forget everything your husband ever gave you on advise for golf". That really put me at ease.
