Florentino C. Martinez

Florentino C. Martinez, age 79, died peacefully March 25 at home while under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family. Florentino was the loving son of the late Florentino and Elodia (Coto) Martinez Vargas and grew up in Cartago, Costa Rica.
As was the norm, Florentino started working at an early age. He learned all things about construction and building but fell in love with the electrician side of things. He met a beautiful girl named Ofelia Varela in the mid 60's and the two would marry on October 27 1968.
Florentino and Ofelia started their family in Costa Rica and moved to East Boston in 1969 where they lived until 1975 when they moved back to Costa Rica. He was an instrumental father to his children and despite being tough on his children he taught all them the value of hard work, honesty, and kindness.
One of the highlights of Florentino's electrician career was the wiring and lighting of the gigantic cross on the hill in Alajuelita which was in honor of Pope John Paul's visit in 1983 and is still standing today. When Florentino was not working, which was not often, he could be found on his road bicycle. He enjoyed the open air and riding. As a young man he rode competitively but as he got older it was strictly pleasure and exercise. He proudly cycled many miles through the countryside of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, and the United States.
He also had passions for coffee, ranchero music, opera, reading, and eating. After Ofelia's passing in the late 1990's he would marry Roxana Abarca. Florentino was the loving Dad or "Papi" of Kattia and John Dawson of East Bridgewater, Mauricio V. Martinez of Easton, Gustavo A. Martinez of Costa Rica, Juan G. Martinez of Costa Rica, Mario G. Martinez of Costa Rica, and the late Florentino Martinez. Loving "Grand Papi" of Cathy, Carolina, Daniel, Samuel, Andres, Kayrenth and Amanda Ofelia. Great "Papi" of Camila, Meliny, and soon to be here; Kevin! Step Dad of Michelle, Melissa, and Michael all of Costa Rica. Loving brother of Mario, Geraldo and the late Ligia and nieces.
All are cordially invited to the Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 35 Spring St. East Bridgewater on Wed. March 29 for a viewing from 9:30-10:30. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Johns Church, 210 Central St. East Bridgewater followed by a burial at Central Cemetery.
