Floyd Arthur (Jughead) Billings of Monroe, Oregon, passed at home on January 7th, 2023, after a very brief bout of cancer. Floyd was born in Newberg, Oregon on December 27th, 1939, to Frank and Maxine Billings. The family relocated to Creswell where he attended grade school. He attended Cottage Grove High School as well as Hoopa Valley High in Hoopa, California.
Floyd worked in sawmills most of his life, working various jobs within the mills until he became head sawyer. He retired from Hull-Oakes Lumber in Dawson, Oregon as their lumber salesman and began working for Elk Creek Forest Products where he worked until he passed.
Floyd was on the Monroe City Council as well as mayor. He was president of the local Little League and coached many of his daughter's softballs teams. In 2008 he was awarded Lumberman of the Year by the Portland Wholesale Lumber Association. In 2021, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce.
Floyd loved hunting in Central Oregon and fishing on the Siuslaw River. He had many friends in the fish camp on the Siuslaw where he and his wife kept their boat and spent many years fishing. He loved to go to Alaska to fish as well.
Floyd married Sue Coleman in Carson City, Nevada. They made their home in Monroe and had one daughter, Layle (Billings) McCord (Russell). He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sharon Agee and by his son, Floyd Jr. He is survived by Sue and daughter Layle of Alpine and Debra Baldy of Sacramento, sons, Oscar (Lori) and Richard (Janice) of Hoopa, as well as 18 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, a sister, Ruth and brother, Gerald (Butch).
There will be a celebration of Floyd's life on February 11th, 2023 at the Monroe High School gym at 1:00 pm in Monroe. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Monroe Fire Dept. or the Monroe Arts Association.
