Fred Ferguson was born in 1931 at St. Peter's Hospital to Evans Merritt and Missie Ferguson. He was raised in New Brunswick Heights, which is now Piscataway, New Jersey. Throughout his early years, he attended school and church under the name Merritt, as circumstances surrounding his family history were not openly discussed. Despite this, his journey was shaped by the love and care of those around him.
Fred's beloved aunt, Marcie Lee Morgan was like a mother to him, sharing stories about his mother, providing him with clothing, and giving him cherished opportunities-such as his unforgettable childhood trip to Dunn, North Carolina. Marcie Lee, a devoted mother to her own children, Emma and Clarence, still extended her love and support to Fred in many ways. Fred was predeceased by two brothers, James and Roosevelt Ferguson, the dearest sister-in-law, Josephine Ferguson, and a beloved son-in-law, James Reed.
Fred dedicated much of his career to hard work and perseverance. He spent 16 years employed at Art Color before transitioning to National Starch, where he worked for 25 years until his retirement in 1992.
In his personal life, Fred found love and companionship with his wife, Eva Middleton. Together, they built a family and raised four children: Deborah Coleman (Oregon), Dorothy Reed (Piscataway), Frederick Ferguson (predeceased), and Jeffrey Ferguson (Connecticut).
Fred is survived by his children, three granddaughters, Lichia Coleman, Sharyce (Andrew) Toppin, and Jasmine Ancrum, three great-grandchildren, Andrew and Alexandria Toppin, and Adenike Adewole, and the best love nephew Roosevelt (June) Ferguson, and a host of family and friends who will cherish his memory. His journey was one of resilience, love, and the lasting impact of family bonds.
May he rest in eternal peace.
