Obituary published on Legacy.com by Silverton Memorial Funeral Home - Toms River on Oct. 1, 2025.
Frederick J. Sandler - known simply as "Fred" to his friends and loved ones - left this world on August 3, 2025, at the age of 77. He greeted the world with a cheerful "hey there!" on November 7, 1947, in New York City. Fred was a man brimming with silly anecdotes, valued advice, inappropriate jokes, and well-earned wisdom.
Fred passed away in
Toms River, New Jersey, with his loving family at his side. He leaves behind a tapestry of memories and stories that will be cherished by his devoted and "lovely bride," Cathy Sandler; his "darling daughter," Elizabeth Mazzarisi; his closest friend and younger brother, Ron Sandler; and many friends and colleagues. He was greeted on the other side by his loving parents, Sollie and Edna Sandler.
Fred's educational and athletic achievements laid the groundwork for his remarkable career. He played football and lacrosse as an undergraduate at Hofstra University, then earned a graduate degree from the University of Virginia. Those experiences helped shape the sharp mind and steady character that defined his 26 years as a Supervisory Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He led with both strength and heart - always ready with a quip that left everyone in stitches.
As a lifelong sports enthusiast, Fred could debate the merits of football plays and baseball pitches with the fervor of a man who beliieved the fate of the world depended on it. His passion for movies was legendary; Fred claimed to have a top 10 list of films, but in reality, it was more like a top 50, subject to change at any moment. When it came to reading, he consumed non-fiction books that were most often provided by his daughter at every occasion.
If you ever heard the loudest laugh in the room, chances are, Fred was behind it. He had a rare talent for turning the mundane or dreary into a hilarious memory. Selfless to a fault, he put others before himself - always ready to lend a hand, unless tools were involved.
Though his work demanded both physical and mental toughness, Fred was equally tender and loving with those who mattered most. Authentic to the core, he was unapologetically himself, living life as if it were a comedy - armed with a punchline, a catchphrase, and the confidence to be the loudest man in the room. He will be missed every day, but his best qualities and advice will live on in those who loved and admired him.
So, "all rise" to honor Fred – a man who left every space a little louder, funnier, and warmer than he found it.
Because Fred loved nothing more than a good story, his family would find comfort in any that can be shared. Please feel free to do so, in his honor.
And since Fred hated formal affairs, a Celebration of Life will be held September 20th at 1 pm at his family's home in Brick, NJ. Address will be sent privately to loved ones.
