Augusta, GA - George Bryan Simkins, 89, husband of Sally Lofton Simkins, entered into rest at his home in Augusta in the early morning of Monday, September 22, 2025. Born in 1936 to Sarah Bryan Simkins and Leroy Hampton Simkins of Beech Island, S.C., Bryan began his elementary education at Downer Institute in Beech Island and was a 1954 graduate of the Academy of Richmond County. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and served in the US Army Reserves.
He began his career as a Realtor with Trotter Realty Company in the late 1960s, brokered through Meybohm and Simkins Commercial and Land and retired after working with Bert Storey Associates. He served as president of the Augusta Board of Realtors and was active in the Georgia Association of Realtors. Bryan was also a licensed auctioneer, conducting fund-raising auctions for a number of organizations, including St. Paul’s Church, Aquinas High School, the Morris Museum of Art, the Augusta Red Cross and Friends of the Augusta Choral Society. He also served as a member of the Augusta- Richmond County Board of Tax Assessors. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church, the Beech Island Agricultural Club, the Augusta Country Club and the Augusta Golf Association.
Family members, in addition to his wife, include his daughters, Frances Merry Simkins of Marietta, Robin Simkins Pongonis and her husband Jay and their daughters, Anne Briscoe, Rebecca Jane, Elizabeth Allan and Margaret George of Marietta; granddaughter: Sarah Frances Simkins of Richmond, VA; brother and sister-in-law Leroy Hampton Simkins and Sarah Turner Simkins of Augusta; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Barbara Lofton McCormick and Harvey W. McCormick of Charleston, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Sarah Bryan Simkins, and his son, George Bryan (B) Simkins Jr.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Hammond Cemetery in Beech Island, S.C., with the Rev. Eric Biddy of St. Paul’s Church officiating. Pallbearers will be James A. Pongonis (Jay), Turner Simkins, Nathaniel Simkins, Christopher Simkins, Brennan Simkins, Paul Dunbar, Dudley Baird Jr., and Lewis Baird.
