Gary Bogli Obituary

Gary L. Bogli
Gary L. Bogli, 87, of Vernon and previously a longtime resident of Manchester, beloved husband of 59 years to Elizabeth "Bette" (Hurley) Bogli, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, June 29, 2024. He was born on August 1, 1936, in Hartford, eldest of four children to the late Albert and Helen (Johnson) Bogli.
Gary grew up in Manchester, attended local schools and graduated as Manchester High School's Class President in 1954. Following high school, he enrolled in Trinity College where he earned his bachelor's degree. Shortly thereafter, he earned his master's degree in education from the University of Hartford. Gary began his 37-year teaching career at Robinson School in West Hartford before an extensive career with the South Windsor Public School system, most notably as a Social Studies teacher at Timothy Edwards Middle School. There, Gary built many lasting relationships and influenced hundreds of students with his wisdom and guidance. When not in the classroom, he enjoyed skiing and spending time outdoors. He was an avid fly fisherman and would be found by the water every chance he could get. Gary was a member of the Connecticut Fly Fisherman's Association and served as President for many years. He was also a member of the Connecticut River Salmon Association and would bring salmon eggs into classrooms to educate students. Gary also coached the JV girls' team in South Windsor. He loved cheering on his favorite basketball team, the UConn Women, and attended many of their final four appearances with his wife. Most of all, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow into the individuals they have become. He looked forward to attending their theater and music performances, boy scout activities and sporting events. During his time in Vernon, he took advantage of living across from Henry Park by walking to the Fox Hill Tower daily. He would chat with anyone he encountered and would always tell people to "Make a Good Day." Although our time with Gary has come to an end, his wit, wisdom and demeanor will be held closely in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues and students for years to come.
In addition to his wife Bette, Gary is survived by his three children, Stephen M. Bogli and his wife Lenka of Prague, Czech Republic, Sharon B. Kerr and her husband Richard of Framingham, MA, and Heather Zilora and her husband James of Manchester; his five grandchildren, Robin Kerr of Washington, D.C., Ethan Kerr of Framingham, MA, Nathan and Jeremy Zilora both of Manchester, and Sebastien Bogli of Prague, Czech Republic; his three siblings, Selden Lee Bogli and his wife Terry of Manchester, Mark Bogli of Meriden, and Kurt Bogli and his wife Bonnie of Willington; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, July 5, 2024, from 4 p.m.- 7 p.m. with a time of remembrance and sharing at 6 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd. (Rte 83) in Vernon. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations in his name may be made to the Connecticut Fly Fisherman's Association or the charity of your choice. I knew Gary since 1950, for over 74 years. We both played basketball at Manchester High. He was a freshman when I was a junior and we scrimmaged against each other at the Armory. We both enjoyed basketball as well as other athletics while at the high school. After high school we went our separate ways.

In 1957 we both arrived at Timothy Edwards Middle School in South Windsor, Gary as a social studies teacher and I as the assistant principal.

Gary was an outstanding teacher. The students were always under control and enjoyed having him as their instructor. He made his classes extremely interesting.

Gary was always a gentleman, a consummate professional and a great team member.

I want to extend my condolences to his wife Bette and his children. whom he talked fondly about frequently.

Mr Bogli was my Social Studies teacher at Timothy Edwards Middles School. I will never forget how nurturing he was when I lost my dad at 13. He asked me to stay after school to clean the desks but I now know he was giving me a chance to talk if I needed to. So full of compassion. Told me to use more elbow grease!!! Why I remember that I do not know. You all know how lucky you were to have him in your lives!! God Bless!! He made a difference in my life.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Gary. My dad (Gus Crombie) treasured their friendship since their days at Trinity College and as fellow fraternity "Crows." Gary was always a kind & shining light.

I extend my sincere condolences to his wife, Bette, his kids and grandkids.
