Gary A. Clure Jr., of Stevens Point, passed away on January 6, 2025, at House of the Dove in Marshfield, at the age of 62.
Gary was born November 23, 1962, in Milwaukee, WI; son of the late Gary Sr. and Carole (McRae) Clure. Gary, born 3 months premature, was rumored to have been brought home in a shoebox. He was so small, he could fit in the palm of your hand. His early entry into the world didn't slow Gary down and he had a zest for learning! He enjoyed reading from encyclopedias, building models of the USS Constitution, and the Invisible Man. After Gary was born, his family moved to Rhinelander where Gary and his brother, Jim, spent time with their grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Then they moved to Neillsville before settling down in Stevens Point where Gary attended Madison Elementary, PJ Jacobs Junior High School, and Stevens Point Area Senior High, graduating in 1981. Gary demonstrated his love of learning in high school, earning excellent grades. He was also a gifted artist and enjoyed hanging out with his friends.
After graduation, Gary continued to work his high school job at Sentry. In fact, he would go on to work for the company for 46 years, working his way up throughout his time there. He worked hard at his career and it paid off when he was able to purchase his own home. Once he was settled, he proudly rescued, Abe; his beloved cat with a heart condition. Gary and Abe later welcomed Louie, a stray cat from the mean streets of Stevens Point.
In his younger years, Gary played in a softball league and was an avid bowler. He joined a bowling league where he was made to buy his own ball; however, Gary drew the line at buying his own shoes. Gary is a beloved brother, uncle, and friend who enjoyed spending time with those he loved, whether it was watching movies, listening to music, or going golfing. While Gary enjoyed sharing his sharp wit and rich sense of humor, he was even more willing to give the world his generosity and compassion. He always stood up for the underdog; with Gary, you could always count on him to be in your corner.
Gary is survived by his brother, Jim Clure of Stevens Point; his sisters, Anne (Sean) Van Lysal of Wisconsin Rapids and Sara (Troy) Stelzer of Kronenwetter; his nieces, Jessica (Brett) Bayless of Aurora, CO, and Hannah (Kevin) Siemen of Wisconsin Rapids; his nephews, Todd Pitsch of Wisconsin Rapids, Andrew (Isasia) Van Lysal of Wisconsin Rapids, and Patrick Stelzer of Kronenwetter; a great niece, Alaina Pitsch; and several aunts and uncles.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Gary Sr. and Carole; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and an uncle, Chuck Reimer.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the palliative care team and staff at UW-Health; especially Dr. Dey, Dr. Howard, Andy Land (RN, BSN, OCN), and Fr. John; and the caring staff at the House of the Dove in Marshfield.
For those wishing to express their sympathies, the family kindly suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Gary's honor to either the Humane Society of Portage County (hspcwi.org) or to the Glioblastoma Research Organization (gbmresearch.org).
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Shuda Funeral Chapel - 3200 Stanley Street, Stevens Point. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
