POTSDAM – Gary A. Hooper, 83, passed away early Thursday morning, January 23, 2025 in Syracuse.
Gary was born in the Town of Potsdam, the son of the late Raymond N. and Neva B. (Planty) Hooper. He attended Converse School District 11 School in Parishville and graduated from Potsdam Central School in 1960.
Gary was a New York State Trooper retiring as a Zone Sergeant in 1992 after 30 years of service. He served in Troops K, B and C which is now Troop D. He was also a Firearms Inspector and an Advanced Accident Auto Reconstruction Specialist during his service. In 1975, he received the General Douglas McCarthur Award for duty unsurpassed, the second highest award in the division. After his retirement he was a New York State certified used car dealer and ran Hooper's Automotive. Additionally, he was an active member of the Winchester Collector's Association, Lifetime member of the Adirondack Chapter of Retired Troopers, and the National Rifle Association. He was a past member of the Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department and Past Vice-Chairman of the St. Lawrence County Conservative Party. He enjoyed auctions, antique cars, tractors, and was a World War II buff.
He is survived his wife, Mary Ellen (Taylor); his sons, Roderick A. Hooper and his wife, Michelle A. of Norwood and Todd Hooper of Norwood; his daughter, Susan E. Cognetti and her husband, Rick of Baldwinsville; his granddaughters, Markie A. and Morgan A. Hooper; his grandson, Carson K. Cognetti; his brother, Paul Hooper of Cocoa Beach, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and James Conklin; and an older brother, Raymond Jr. who died in infancy.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, however there will be no services at this time. A graveside service will be held in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery, Potsdam.
In lieu of flowers those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made the Potsdam Animal Shelter.
