Gary L Thorne, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who left this world after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 69 on November 28, 2024 with the same quiet dignity and sly grin with which he lived his life. Born on June 20, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gary's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his steadfast work ethic, and his warm-hearted nature.
Gary was full of love and generosity throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Joliet West High School, class of 1973, and soon after, he embarked on a dedicated career at Flint Hills Resources. Gary retired in 2017 following an impressive 44-years of service, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment to his colleagues and the company.
Family was the cornerstone of Gary's life. He was a loving father to his daughters, Julie Thorne, Jeanette (Tyler) Foley, and Jill (Donnie) Klover. His role as a grandfather was one he cherished deeply, always finding joy in the company of his grandchildren, Mackenzie Kraus, Mason Foley, Raelynn, and Francis Klover. Gary's love extended to his siblings, Lorna (Brian) Lynch and James Thorne, and sister-in-law Candace Bouchea, as well as his numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom felt the warmth of his caring presence.
Gary was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lynn Thorne, his parents, Darold and Marilyn Thorne, and his brother-in-law, Brian Lynch. His legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew him best.
A man of simple pleasures, Gary enjoyed his regular exercise routine, which consisted of a leisurely stroll around Costco, artfully dodging shopping carts while sampling every free snack in sight. His post-workout consisted of a well-earned hot dog on his way out-a tradition his children and grandchildren will carry on. So here's to Gary-father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. May we all carry a piece of his humor in our hearts and a hot dog in our hands as we remember the man who made every day a little brighter and every meal a little tastier. Here's to you, Gary. Keep the laughter going until we meet again.
Memorial Services to celebrate Gary's life will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 from 10am – 2pm at the Farkas Funeral Home, Richard Tapella, Funeral Director. Inurnment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery where Gary will be laid to rest next to his wife, Lynn. His family invites you to hold him in your thoughts, remembering him as the loving, generous, and handy man that he was. His was a life that exemplified the beauty of giving, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Pink Heals Joliet Area Chapter, www.pinkhealsjoliet.org or Lightways Hospice, www.lightways.org, would be appreciated.
