Gary L. Wilmes, 79, of Louisville, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 3, 2025, in the presence of his loving wife and children.
He was born September 23, 1946, in Evansville, Indiana, one of ten children to the late Oscar T. Wilmes and Bernadine Becher Wilmes. His brother, David and brother-in-law, Tom Hammons preceded him in death.
During Gary's high school years, he met the love of his life, Janis Wallingford. She, a student at Waggener High School, and he a student at Trinity met at Frisch's on Shelbyville Road. They dated for a few years before asking for her hand in marriage. On August 12, 1967, they were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, spending the next 58 years together.
Gary utilized his knowledge and education and started his own software engineering company, GL Wilmes & Associates and has been in business for over 40 years. He and his wife were founding members of Epiphany Catholic Church and are presently members of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. He was passionate about the Clydesdale Bicycle Club and raising money for cancer riding to support so many across our community. Gary never met a stranger, was the life of the party by having a joke or a story to tell. Gary was a true family man, always focused on putting his loved ones at the center of his life. Family wasn't just an important part of life; it's the foundation of who he was.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Janis; children, Chris Wilmes (Laurie), Laura Wilmes (Ty Constant); two grandchildren, Cooper Wilmes and Tate Constant; siblings, Thomas (Susan), Michael (Beth), Carol Brantley (Gary), Victoria Koerber (Jeff), Gail Becker (David), Donna Dykes (Mike), Sheila Hammons, Brenda Waller (Bob); sister-in-law, Donna Wilmes and many adored nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated t 10 am Monday, October 13, 2025, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Road, Louisville. Visitation will be from 1-5 pm Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, St. Matthews. He will be entombed at Saint Ferdinand Catholic Cemetery, Fedinand, IN at a later date.
In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to Trinity High School.
