Geoffrey Hastings Fletcher, affectionately known as Geof to his friends and loved ones, was a man whose life was defined by his spirit, his handy nature, and his unwavering passion for the things he loved. Born on the 2nd of January, 1946, in the vibrant city of Kingston, Jamaica, Geof's journey began as the proud son of Harold and Cecily Fletcher. His early years in Jamaica were marked by a rich cultural heritage and a solid education at West Indies College, which laid the foundation for a life of spirited endeavors.
On July 30th, 2025, Geof's remarkable journey came to a close in
Chicago, Illinois, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, and creativity. His life was a tapestry of experiences and relationships, woven together by the shared moments with those he held dear. Geof's sisters, Mavia and Merlene Fletcher, his cherished children, Shelley Fletcher Tillman, Codi Fletcher with his wife Theresa, and Gillian H. Fletcher with her husband Patrick Phelemba, will remember the experiences of being the children of Geoffrey. His legacy will continue to flourish through his grandchildren, Devon Brown, Psalm Fletcher Phelemba, Caylin Fletcher, Jessica Deeson, Alexis Deeson, and Shiloh Fletcher Phelemba, and will be celebrated by his two nieces, one nephew, one sister-in-law, and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother Hiram Fletcher and his grandson Raland R. Brown. He will also be remembered by his special friend and caregiver Patricia Craig.
Geof's working life was as rich and varied as his personal interests. He dedicated many years to General Foods, where his work ethic and congenial nature made him a valued team member. Later, he transitioned to the Jamaica Tourist Board, where he continued to excel until his retirement. His professional journey was marked by the same dedication and enthusiasm that he brought to every aspect of his life.
Outside of work, Geof was a man of many passions. His love for music was only matched by his fondness for cars. He found joy in building and collecting model cars, a hobby that allowed him to work with his hands and create intricate pieces of art. Wrestling and car racing were among his favorite pastimes, providing him with hours of entertainment and excitement. Yet, it was his love for drawing that often captured the essence of his imagination, as he brought his visions to life on paper.
Geof's spirit was one of adventure and creativity. He was a man who thrived on challenges and never shied away from the opportunity to learn something new or tackle a complex project. His hands were rarely still, always busy at work on a new model cars or sketching his next masterpiece. His courage was evident in every aspect of his life, from his bold move to the United States to his battle with life's trials.
In saying farewell to Geoffrey Hastings Fletcher, we celebrate a man who lived his life with a spirited zest and a courageous heart. He was a beacon of creativity. Geof was known as a loyal friend.
