It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, George Hood, on October 26, 2025, at Saint Joseph Hospital in
Nashua, NH. He was 83 years old.
Born in December 1941 in Malden, Massachusetts, George was the son of George Hood Sr., a respected Sergeant in the Malden Police Department, and Elizabeth ("Betty Murphy") Hood. He grew up alongside his older brother Ronnie Hood, who predeceased him, learning early on the values of courage, resilience, and service to others.
George's athletic talent shone brightly from a young age. As a standout football player at Malden High School, he earned a scholarship to Kansas University-a testament to his dedication and skill. After college, George returned home to Malden, following in his father's footsteps as a police officer for two years before finding his true calling in the Malden Fire Department, which he joined in 1970. He served his community with unwavering bravery until his retirement.
Among his many acts of heroism, one stands out: as part of Engine 6, George received a citation for rescuing a woman from her burning home in Revere. Despite being beaten back by intense heat and smoke, he donned a mask, entered the building, and carried a woman to safety, giving her a second chance at life. True to his humble nature, George never boasted about his accomplishments, but his quiet courage spoke volumes.
George married Barbara Hood, and though their paths eventually diverged, their friendship and care for each other endured until his final days. He is survived by his loving children: Dr. Colleen Wentworth, son-in-law Chad Wentworth of Cary, North Carolina, and Corporal Kevin Hood of Ayer, Massachusetts. George was a proud grandfather to Andre Hood (21) and Kendall Wentworth (14). He also leaves behind his childhood friend, Nick Spinazzola, and many nieces and nephews who will remember his warmth and wisdom.
Our dad loved the sunshine and especially the beach. He migrated to Florida, where he spent over 20 years walking miles along the shore, soaking in the beauty and peace of the ocean with his beloved dog, Mars. Eventually, he returned to New England, bringing with him stories and memories of sun-soaked days.
Throughout his life, George remained passionate about bodybuilding, fitness, and nutrition-a commitment he maintained well into his senior years. He always had an untamed nature. Whether he was diving into the frigid waters of the Saco River or racing full speed down Attitash Mountain, he showed us how to live in the moment. He enjoyed teaching us how to swim, ice skate, drive a stick shift, and taking us on countless adventures up North. He was always ready for a good water slide and a laugh. He was our teacher, our protector, and our biggest supporter.
We will miss him deeply-his quiet strength, his gentle guidance, and the love he gave so freely. Thank you, Dad, for everything.
With love,
Colleen and Kevin
